Editor Review

So I employed the services of a fellow writer/editor/friend Darci Cole, to proof read Kiya for me and I just felt like sharing her thoughts on it!

"You've got the makings of a very good story. It has a lot of potential. The characters are amazingly developed. I honestly think that was my favorite part. Your characters here are so consistent, honest, and true. Sometimes they're predictable and sometimes they're surprising, just like in real life. With very few exceptions, they behave organically, and that's a REALLY hard thing to accomplish. So I say to you, well done.

The only character relationship I didn't get a very good feel for was Kiya/Malachi. They interact so infrequently in the text that when he professes his love it felt really... forced? I think? It just felt like I didn't know him enough to know whether he was being honest. I'd hold that out a bit longer and give us a little more interaction between them before he comes out and says it. Make us WANT him to say it. Kiya's reactions to everything he does are perfect though, so definitely keep them consistent.

On a more critical note, you've got a lot of little grammar and spelling details that need to be corrected. I tried to show you those as I went along... Also, I noted where some of your language shook me from the moment. For example, you sometimes use phrases that are very modern, and don't fit the time frame you're writing to. Watch out for that.

Along those same lines, I felt like Kiya/Naomi's voice was kind of young. Especially at the beginning, it didn't sound as 'adult' as it should have. And this is DEFINITELY an adult book. You did the sex scenes very well, and tastefully, and they were very true to the period and the environment. I guess I was expecting a YA novel for some reason, and this is very much not YA. Well, maybe to some people it would be, but I know a lot of LDS parents would freak out if their YA's and older youth were reading something so graphic. (Notice I didn't say raunchy or dirty, just graphic.)

Lastly, the story itself doesn't have a lot of structure. This is not my strong suit, so please take this with a grain of salt... It was very gripping in places, but I didn't really feel a beginning-middle-end to the whole thing. I understand it's "book one," but it still needs to be able to stand on its own. To me, it doesn't do that right now...
Thank you again to Darci! You are awesome! And for anyone else interested in doing an edit etc let me know. I'm willing to do trade offs as well for anything, not just story writing.
