Blog Tour: Forget Me Not by Stacey Nash

Today I have Will, from Stacey Nash's novel; Forget Me Not on the blog answering questions.

How long have you known Mae? Can you tell us about the first time you met?
For eight years; since I was ten. The first time I met her wasn’t long after my family moved. School had just gone back after the summer vacation, but Emalee and I hadn’t started yet because we’d just moved and mom was still sorting the school thing out. I was in the yard and heard noise coming from over the fence, so I peeked over the top and there she was. Head sunk in her hands, sniffling. I called out and she looked up then told me to go away. I didn’t, I climbed over the fence and sat beside her on the back porch. That was the day her mom disappeared.

Were you always friends or did you have to get past the boy/girl germs first?
Right from that first day we’ve been friends. There was never any akwardness

Tell us about your family.
They’re great. Dad lets me spend time down at the shop with him. He’s taught me a lot about cars, motors, and stuff. Mom’s mom. Just the one sibling; Emalee’s still a kid, but she’s a good kid. Not too annoying, you know.

Describe the kind of person you see yourself as.

Loyal, honest. I guess I’m someone who sticks by his friends and always does the right thing.

If you could freeze one moment in time, when would it be?
That moment hasn’t happened yet, but it will. *grins*
What's your...
Favorite ice cream? Vanilla.
Dream job? Mechanic. But I’d love to work on rebuilding old cars, like a classics remodeler or something. That would be cool.
Ultimate getaway? Tricky question. A long road trip—somewhere pretty—where I could just cruise along on the motorbike.
Greatest strength? Umm, my loyalty or maybe my strength. *flexes arms* Yeah, definitely by strength.
Greatest vice? Mae, of course.

Last of all, tell us about the role you play in Forget Me Not.

The role I play? This isn’t some movie we’re talking about, it’s my life and what the heck is Forget Me Not?

Ah, sorry, I mean all this craziness with Mae’s pendant and the Collective.

If Mae’s going to fight, my place is beside her. There’s really not much else to say.

Blurb: Since her mother vanished nine years ago, Anamae and her father have shared a quiet life. But when Anamae discovers a brooch identical to her mother's favorite pendant, she unknowingly invites a slew of trouble into their world. When the brooch and the pendant are worn together they're no longer pretty pieces of jewelry -- they're part of a highly developed technology capable of cloaking the human form. Triggering the jewelry's power attracts the attention of a secret society determined to confiscate the device -- and silence everyone who is aware of its existence. Anamae knows too much, and now she's Enemy Number One.

She's forced to leave her father behind when she's taken in by a group determined to keep her safe. Here Anamae searches for answers about this hidden world. With her father kidnapped and her own life on the line, Anamae must decide if saving her dad is worth risking her new friends’ lives. No matter what she does, somebody is going to get hurt.

Excerpt:

The gas meter beeps when he reaches the top of the staircase. Coming upstairs seems kind of strange. I mean, surely gas leaks would have to be a kitchen thing. The beeping sets my teeth on edge, and I just want it to stop. Maybe there’s something wrong, but here in the upstairs hall?
“That doesn’t sound good,” I mutter.
“It means there is indeed…”
He twists, angling himself toward my open bedroom door, and his gaze locks on my dresser. The back of my neck prickles, a sure sign something about this just isn’t right. What the…I step past him and pull the door closed, but he pushes me aside and slams it open. Panic shoots through me, but I’m fast enough to dart around him. Turning my shoulder and reaching for the box.
He lunges toward me, grabs me from behind, and his arm pins my neck to him with a shoulder crushing grip. He pushes me against the dresser, and the box falls open, its contents spilling across the top. Heart pounding, my throat burns with a scream. I’ve got to get him out of here. He must know about my pendant, the brooch. Dammit. I wriggle to escape his vice-like grip, but it’s no use -- he’s too strong.
My hand darts toward the pendant. I snatch it, but he grabs my wrist. Adrenaline tries to pound my heart right out of its home in my chest. If only I can get the jewelry on, I might be able to make its magic work and hide.
“Tech breech confirmed,” he speaks into his collar in a matter-of-fact tone; then he turns his gaze to me. “Give me the pendant.”
There’s a tiny ripping sound, like velcro torn open. A young guy in a black leather jacket flickers into my bedroom. A sharp gasp leaves me. I can’t escape one attacker, let alone two. Where the heck are these men coming from? I’m not going down without a fight, so I kick at my captor’s shins. The leather jacket guy wrenches the man’s grip from my shoulders and punches him square in the chin, knocking his head to the side. Shaking his head, the gas man stumbles backward.
The jacket guy raises his knee and drives a foot into the other man’s stomach. The straight, hard kick makes a loud thud and forces the dude to double over and curl in on himself. The leather jacket guy crouches and drives his fist straight up into the man’s chin. It knocks him flat on his back like a felled tree.
My chest rises and falls with my quickened breath. My heart thuds like a booming drum. The mysterious rescuer turns toward me, holding my gaze with intense, steady jade eyes. He grabs my assailant by the arm, and they both flicker out of my room.
My mind spins.
Legs, arms, body -- I can’t move, but it doesn’t matter. Moving is the least of my worries. Who were they, and what just happened? The meter seemed to lead him straight to Mom’s pendant. Gas man, my ass.
I clutch my head in an attempt to stop my mind spinning, but my hand slides off my sweaty forehead and falls against my tightened stomach. What if they come back? The guy in the jacket…
What was that? The brooch, the pendant…my disappearing reflection. They wanted it. Damn.
Sweat trickles down my forehead and into my eyes. I wipe it away with a trembling hand. Questions hurtle through my mind, all jumbling together as they race faster and faster in my mind. Seconds, minutes, hours I don’t know, but a single thought emerges through the haze of my mind.
 Will.

From Australia With Love Hop feat. S.M Johnson

Today I am featuring S.M Johnson for the From Australia with Love hop. She talks about writing, gives some advice, and soe of her favorite Aussie things!
1.     How many years have you been writing?
That question isn't as easy to answer as it sounds. I wrote poetry in high school. Then when I was at university I wrote some plays, they weren't very good plays or poetry, but they were a way for me to express myself, even if they were mainly just for me. One of the plays I wrote was a way for me to process the suicide of a guy I went to school with. Then I fooled around with short stories. It was in around 2009 that I started taking my writing more seriously and begun work on my first novel.
2.     What is your current W. I. P. about?
LOL - another not easily answered question as I have about five WIPs (I have a very odd way of writing). The main two that I'm working on are Deserter, which is the sequel to Sleeper. It continues the story of Mishca and Ryder. Mishca dealing with the truth about her origins, the fact that she was created to be a soldier and that she could be called up for duty at any time. Ryder dealing with fallout from the truth about Mishca and Colin's love, trying to show her that he understands and finally meeting his birth mother.
Karma is the second project. I wrote it originally as a short story, which was runner-up in the Australian Literary Review's short story competition. It revolves around a hidden clan residing in inner Brisbane that are responsible for delivering karma, both good and bad, to humans. The Apportioners, as they're known, are hybrids, part human - part Immora (mistaken for Gods in ancient Greece). The main character, Justin, is assigned a secret assignment by one of the most feared Immora, Doom.
3.     What types of books do you read?
I mainly read Young Adult and New Adult, but I have a soft spot for speculative fiction and science fiction. Some of my favourite stories include White Cat, Across the Universe, The Time Travellers Wife and Sweet Evil.
4.     Do you have any advice for novice writers?
Learn your craft. Research and learn the techniques you need to create a great story. Show don't tell, eliminating passive speech, world building, pacing are just some of the things you need to understand before hurtling into a story. Many authors will offer advice on topics like this on their websites and blogs. Liking authors' Facebook pages and following them on twitter is a great way to get insight into these writing tips.
Another thing is embrace feedback, not your ego. Have a few beta readers/critique partners who look over your work. If they''re all saying similar feedback, listen to it.
5.     What is your most successful marketing tool?
Definitely Twitter, closely followed by my mother. Twitter has enabled me to connect with readers and fellow authors, which is so important for an author with small press. You can't just plug yourself and your book though. Twitter is conversational. Engage people and you'll end up not only with readers, but with friends too.
6.     If you were one of the characters in your book which one would you be and why?
I am already in my book…how naughty am I? For Sleeper I wrote a person based on me, which is Sherry the Adoption Support Group leader. Just because I thought it would be funny. One of my WIP also has a character that is a lot of me because it's about my dad's terminal cancer and the MC goes through what I went through.
7.     If you could visit any time period, would you go back or forward and why?
I would love to visit Jane Austen's time period, just to observe and see what went on. I wouldn't like to live there though because of women's rights.
8.     If you could live and write anywhere in the world, where would it be?
My favourite place to write is at Blacks Beach. I don't write there anymore as we don't go there very often, but when my husband was a lifeguard I spend a summer there at the beach writing until my laptop battery went flat. Fun times.
9.     What is your favorite Aussie food?
Definitely Lamingtons. So yummy *nom nom*
10.   What is your favorite Aussie destination?
I love where I live in Mackay and just a bit north is Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. I love going up there.

No white wash

I was completely out of touch with the publishing industry when I first thought of the idea for SLEEPER. I loved to read and wrote for fun, but I knew nothing about the politics, debates and issues surrounding MCs of colour, such as the lack of representation of them in fiction and the white washing of covers. Instead I was blissfully ignorant and never for a minute did I think that my leading lady would be anything but of African-American descent.

From the very first moment I thought of the story concept, I had a strong image of Mishca, and it is almost identical to the model on the cover of SLEEPER. Brown skin, tight curls that almost make an afro, almond eyes. This is how she was to me so that’s how I wrote her.

It was only after I finished the story and started investigating publishing options did I come across the many and varied debates. There were lots of articles around this, including ones that held the belief having a MC of colour would result in lower sales, especially if they appeared on the cover of a book.

That only made me more determined to have Mishca represented properly on the cover of SLEEPER. If people were too narrow minded to buy my book because of the colour of my MC then so be it. I wouldn’t be compromising my vision for my story based on that.

And Entranced came through. The cover for SLEEPER was gorgeous and a perfect match for the story and the vision I had for Mishca.

I don’t think writers should be deterred by these race issues. If you envisage your MC as a certain race, trust your gut and stick with it. The more writers do this, the more diversity in books will become the norm.

Review Snippets:

SLEEPER is a fast-paced adventure filled with mystery, romance, action, and humor. Mishca and Ryder rank up there with my favorite heroines and heroes ever! S.M. Johnston is an author to watch out for.” ~Wendy Higgins, author of Sweet Evil, Sweet Peril, and Sweet Reckoning.

Excerpt:

SOMEONE WILL DIE SO I can live. I’ve come to terms with that. It used to turn my
stomach, how my donor might die, but now I’m used to it. It’ll most likely be a car accident or a
drunken fall from a height, especially at this time of year, with all the end-of-school parties. But
not from illness or any other “natural” causes. A violent, painful death will be my savior. That’s
how I will get my new heart.
I open my eyes and stare upwards, hoping the white, fluffy clouds that splotch against
the blue sky will distract me from the images of people dying that flow through my head. I guess
I’m not as used to the idea of getting someone else’s heart as I thought. The harsh Australian sun
brings beads of sweat to my brow and a squint to my eyes. I swing my legs around and hoist
myself upright on the stadium bleacher, looking out over the sports field. I readjust the singlet
strap that had slipped off my shoulder and try to think happier thoughts. At least I won’t be
responsible for the person who dies so I can get a new heart.
Yeah, happier thoughts.
I let out a sigh. This is not how I expected to be spending my schoolies week, with my
dad as he puts hopeful rugby league players through their paces. My friends are all doing the
traditional, Aussie, end-of-high-school celebration with a weeklong party, but instead of Airlie or
the Gold Coast, they’re all in Bali, where I should be. It’s the big party to start our summer
holidays before we find out which university we’ve been accepted into. When Mum and Dad
found out I was at the top of the transplant list, they vetoed my November plans in case
someone croaks this week. So all my friends left, minus me. I know it’s because Mum and Dad
care. They’ve proved time and time again that you don’t need blood ties to be great parents, or
overprotective ones.
“All right, boys. That wraps it up for today,” Dad calls out to the pack of sweaty guys.
“Hit the showers, and I’ll see you all tomorrow.”
I do my best not to stare as the group heads towards me. Half of them are shirtless, their
muscles glistening after the training session. Okay, so I’m staring. A cute, red-haired guy catches
me looking and winks. So, I reward him with a smile. A guy from school, who obviously chose a
potential sporting career over a party week, nudges Cutie Ginger and then shakes his head. I
hold back a huff. I thought with the end of an era, I could have a fresh start, but my reputation
looks like it will haunt me beyond high school. Mishca the untouchable.
Dad lingers behind, deep in discussions with the managers and trainers, no doubt
discussing the fates of the young men desperate to break into rugby league at a national level.
They were all trying so hard to get Coach Tom Richardson’s attention. If only I had that many
guys chasing after me. I wipe the sweat that’s formed at the edge of my almost afro, before it
trickles down my brow. Yuck. Finally, Dad makes his way towards me, leaving his entourage
behind.
“So, any contenders in your latest batch of victims?” I ask, picking up my discarded copy
of West Side Story. I’d been rereading my university audition piece, torturing myself on how I
could have performed it better. I wish I had tried out for plays at school, but I was a closet actor,
only performing in drama class for fear that somehow my weak disposition would get in the way.
But next year will be different. A new heart and new hope.
“There may be some. Tomorrow will be the clincher,” Dad replies, humouring me. He
knows I’m not that interested in his latest player acquisitions. He puts his hand on my shoulder.
“I’ve got to grab some paperwork from the office before we go.”
“Sure thing,” I say to his back as he retreats up the tunnel under the stadium. I trudge
behind him, my book clutched in my hand. With each step the tips of my curls brush lightly against my bare shoulders. It tickles and
I regret agreeing with Mum to grow my hair out. I shove my hands into the pockets of my denim
shorts and focus on the cool shade I’ll get once I’m inside.
My nose wrinkles the moment I step in the door. The whole place smells like dude, and
not in a good way, but in the male equivalent of a stinky, wet dog way. I walk down the corridor
and lean against the cool cement wall outside Dad’s office.
My heart transplant operation is like a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, only there’s
no countdown to watch. Evil thoughts invade my mind again, only now about my parents.

Would they still have wanted to adopt me if they’d known I had a congenial heart disease, or in
simpler terms, a hole in my heart?
