Nickoli’s arms were laden with weapons when he came back into view. He stepped in, uninvited, and opened his arms; allowing each deadly piece to drop to the ground with an ear-splitting clang. I jumped back as the items ricocheted across the floor, and a club rolled to a stop by my feet.

Nickoli bent over and picked up a sword. He approached me, a menacing look on his face, and a flash of terror tore through me. The temptation to scream was strong, however I knew it wouldn’t do me any good. If his intention was to kill me, the deed would be long done before my cries for help would be answered. If they were ever answered. I kept my focus on the sharp tip of the sword as he advanced on me.

“If you choose not to trust me, you will have to protect yourself.”

He raised the sword, gripped the hilt in his fist, and hurled it into the floor at my feet. The tip embedded into the wood with a thud. I yelped in surprise and jumped back. With an angry glare, he turned to storm out of the room; leaving the pile of weapons scattered about the floor.

“I don’t know how to fight with a sword,” I called out, my voice void of the angry bluster it carried earlier.

He didn’t stop, but instead replied over his shoulder as his long strides carried him out the door. “Then Princess, you best learn how.”

The slam of his door signaled the end to our conversation.

Today I have Jamie Ayres, author or 18 Things, and now it's sequel, 18 Truths, visiti my blog to interview her character, Nate. Take it away!

Jamie: Thanks for hosting, Katie!!! Dr. Judy, Olga and Nate’s therapist, let me borrow her office for this interview. *hears knock on the door* Come in! *At 5-foot-10, Nate enters wearing faded jeans and a gray T-shirt that says “Reckless” across his chest, unfortunately covering up most of his lean and muscular body. His boyish face is dominated by large, ocean blue expressive eyes, and his hair is crammed under an army green hat, a few coffee-colored strands peeking out onto his forehead.* Hey, Nate. How are you today?

Nate: Okay, still a little sore from the accident.

Jamie: Shh, they don’t know about that yet. No spoilers!

Nate: Oops, sorry.

Jamie: You’re forgiven. Seriously, it’s no wonder Olga couldn’t stay mad at you for long in 18 Truths after—

Nate: Hey, hey cupcake! You said no spoilers!

Jamie: *blushes* I love it when you call me cupcake.

Nate: *laughs* Focus, Jamie. Although I know that’s hard for you.

Jamie: *waggles eyebrows* Especially around shiny objects.

Nate: *clears throat* Maybe doing the interview without Olga this time was a bad idea.

Jamie: Come on, I’m just teasing. Sort of. Let’s get started. I thought it would be fun to pull a Dr. Judy today and dig around in your head a bit…

Nate: Wait, what?

Jamie: Uh…well…doesn’t that sound like fun?

Nate: Yeah, because my storyline in 18 Truths wasn’t torture enough. Why you gotta be like that, Miss Author?

Jamie: Hey! It wasn’t torture. It led you to—

Nate: Grace…yeah, she was a pretty cool chick, and I’m glad I got to help her. Well, really, she helped Olga and me more than we helped her in the end. Hey, speaking of Olga, my favorite cool chick, why don’t I dig around in her head a bit for you. You know, because now that we’re working on the third installment of the trilogy, 18 Thoughts, I can—

Jamie: Okay, why don’t you just leave the questions up to me before you give all my secrets away. Now you mentioned Grace, let’s talk about her a bit. What exactly is your relationship with her?

Nate: *rolls eyes* You’re kiddin’ me, right? You’re just as ridiculous as Olga. What’s my relationship?

Jamie: Why are you acting so confused? It’s a simple question.

Nate: *shifts uncomfortably in seat* Crap. I never should have agreed to this interview. You and Olga are always analyzing everything I do, reading into stuff. Listen, Grace was my first spirit guide assignment. Helping her was my job. She’d been through hell and back. She needed my undivided attention.

Jamie: *looks Nate up and down* She’s a very lucky girl. Actually, I could use some of your undivided attention with something.

Nate: *blushes* Now, Jamie, you know how jealous Olga can get.

Jamie: *giggles like a little school girl* Of course. Speaking of jealous, I have to admit that one of my favorite parts about 18 Truths was the addition of Riel. Did you ever get jealous of his relationship with Olga?

Nate: Not really. I mean, what’s there to be envious of, exactly?

Jamie: Oh, I dunno. He’s charming, witty, powerful, he can fly, he can—

Nate: So, any other questions for me?

Jamie: Right, moving on. I guess I should ask you about Conner.

Nate: I guess I thought you’d know better than to go there.

Jamie: Wow, you sure are a hot mess tonight.

Nate: *winks* That’s what she said.

Jamie: HA!  I’m sure she did. The she being Olga, right? Meaning there’s no chance for me and you to ever—

Nate: Nope. *caresses my ring finger as I swoon* You’re a married lady, remember? Not to mention you’re quite a bit older than me.

Jamie: Oh! You just had to ruin the moment, didn’t you? *hides first appearance of gray hairs*

Nate: *closes eyes & takes a deep breath* By older, I mean more mature and freakishly insightful. You did invent Olga, after all.

Jamie: *grins* Oh, Nate, you flatter me. But you’re pretty insightful, too. If I recall correctly, you wrote a very sweet poem for Olga in 18 Things and then you wrote that song for her, Summertime. I know you hoped to major in philosophy in college. Since this book is called 18 Truths, can you tell me an indelible truth that reflects your philosophy on life?

Nate: I actually like the quote you used for the last chapter in the book. “Then you will know the truth, and truth will set you free.”

Jamie: Ah, yes, that one is near and dear to my heart. But why that quote?

Nate: I think the most important thing we can do in life is to be truthful and free ourselves from self-deception. When we’re truthful with ourselves, then we know clearly what path to take. There’s freedom in that, to seek after what we really want. The truth frees us and others to be all we’re meant to be.

Jamie: Sooo true!  How about we leave things off with you telling us your favorite part of the book?

Nate: *raises his adorable bushy eyebrows* Can I say the make out sessions?

Jamie: How did I know you would say that? Such a g-u-y! I’m assuming you mean the make out sessions between you and Olga?

Nate: You know what? I think this interview is over.

Jamie: Oh, come on, don’t be mad.

Nate: No, it’s not that. I just have to go pick up Olga now or I’ll be late.

Jamie: Ooh la la! Hot date?

Nate: No more questions!

Jamie: *sighs heavily* Fine, fine. Thanks for coming in to meet me today.

Nate: *looks over his shoulder at me as he pauses at the door* I don’t suppose you could repay the favor by telling me who Olga chooses for her one and only at the end of all this?

Jamie: Oh, Nate! Such a bad boy . . . I should give you a spanking! What kind of author would I be if I didn’t torture my characters a little bit more? *watches Nate run away and shrugs*

S.C.Mitchell: A Guy Writing Romance

What is a guy doing writing romance?

 Yes, I am a guy. A guy who reads, writes and loves romance. We’re few, but we’re here. I love writing romantic tales set in fantastic worlds, and I’ve created a few of them.

I started out writing science fiction and fantasy, and I am still pursuing projects in those genres, but I found when I mixed in a romantic element, the story always got stronger and more satisfying.

I was an avid comic book collector as a kid, right up into my 20’s. From comics I discovered Robert E. Howard’s Conan series of books. It was only a short jump from there to Tolkien and other fantasy and science fiction authors, my all time favorite is Anne McCaffrey. I’ve spent many wonder filled days on Pern and her other fantastic worlds. It was my wife that introduced me to the romance genre with Nora Roberts book Enchanted. (You never forget your first romance.)

My first published work, Swiftly Beats the heart, is a romance novella about two superheroes, a direct tribute to my early years of neglecting my homework, lost in a comic book. There are a lot of fantasy and science fiction elements (magic, fantastic creatures, dimensional rifts) in my Demons Rising trilogy. And in my latest novel, Son of Thunder, I was able to blend in my love of Norse mythology as well.

I often have to remind that the heart of my story is the romance itself. The fantastic elements are really just window dressing. The real story is two people falling in love. The prize/triumph/payoff isn’t defeating the nasty villain. It’s the love the two discover along the journey. If I stay grounded in the love story, I can add in just about anything else.

S.C.Mitchell grew up an avid reader of comic books, science fiction and fantasy literature. He credits his wife with introducing him to the paranormal romance genre. He’s been writing stories for over thirty years. In 2010 he left his job as a computer desktop support specialist to pursue his passion for writing. He is a member of the Romance Writers of America and the Writer’s Voice.
Steve lives with his wife of thirty-five years in the wooded northlands of Wisconsin. They have two adult children.
When he’s not writing, Steve enjoys gardening, reading, music and computer gaming.

From Australia With Love Hop feat. S.M Johnson

Today I am featuring S.M Johnson for the From Australia with Love hop. She talks about writing, gives some advice, and soe of her favorite Aussie things!

1.     How many years have you been writing?

That question isn't as easy to answer as it sounds. I wrote poetry in high school. Then when I was at university I wrote some plays, they weren't very good plays or poetry, but they were a way for me to express myself, even if they were mainly just for me. One of the plays I wrote was a way for me to process the suicide of a guy I went to school with. Then I fooled around with short stories. It was in around 2009 that I started taking my writing more seriously and begun work on my first novel.

2.     What is your current W. I. P. about?

LOL - another not easily answered question as I have about five WIPs (I have a very odd way of writing). The main two that I'm working on are Deserter, which is the sequel to Sleeper. It continues the story of Mishca and Ryder. Mishca dealing with the truth about her origins, the fact that she was created to be a soldier and that she could be called up for duty at any time. Ryder dealing with fallout from the truth about Mishca and Colin's love, trying to show her that he understands and finally meeting his birth mother. 

Karma is the second project. I wrote it originally as a short story, which was runner-up in the Australian Literary Review's short story competition. It revolves around a hidden clan residing in inner Brisbane that are responsible for delivering karma, both good and bad, to humans. The Apportioners, as they're known, are hybrids, part human - part Immora (mistaken for Gods in ancient Greece). The main character, Justin, is assigned a secret assignment by one of the most feared Immora, Doom. 

3.     What types of books do you read?

I mainly read Young Adult and New Adult, but I have a soft spot for speculative fiction and science fiction. Some of my favourite stories include White Cat, Across the Universe, The Time Travellers Wife and Sweet Evil.

4.     Do you have any advice for novice writers?

Learn your craft. Research and learn the techniques you need to create a great story. Show don't tell, eliminating passive speech, world building, pacing are just some of the things you need to understand before hurtling into a story. Many authors will offer advice on topics like this on their websites and blogs. Liking authors' Facebook pages and following them on twitter is a great way to get insight into these writing tips. 

Another thing is embrace feedback, not your ego. Have a few beta readers/critique partners who look over your work. If they''re all saying similar feedback, listen to it. 

5.     What is your most successful marketing tool?

Definitely Twitter, closely followed by my mother. Twitter has enabled me to connect with readers and fellow authors, which is so important for an author with small press. You can't just plug yourself and your book though. Twitter is conversational. Engage people and you'll end up not only with readers, but with friends too. 

6.     If you were one of the characters in your book which one would you be and why?

I am already in my book…how naughty am I? For Sleeper I wrote a person based on me, which is Sherry the Adoption Support Group leader. Just because I thought it would be funny. One of my WIP also has a character that is a lot of me because it's about my dad's terminal cancer and the MC goes through what I went through. 

7.     If you could visit any time period, would you go back or forward and why?

I would love to visit Jane Austen's time period, just to observe and see what went on. I wouldn't like to live there though because of women's rights.

8.     If you could live and write anywhere in the world, where would it be?

My favourite place to write is at Blacks Beach. I don't write there anymore as we don't go there very often, but when my husband was a lifeguard I spend a summer there at the beach writing until my laptop battery went flat. Fun times. 

9.     What is your favorite Aussie food?

Definitely Lamingtons. So yummy *nom nom*

10.   What is your favorite Aussie destination?

I love where I live in Mackay and just a bit north is Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. I love going up there.

Aussie Owned One Year Anniversary Hop

The blog, Aussie Owned and Read, of which I participate, is celebrating their one year anniversary. Hooray! To celebrate, they are hosting this hop, Celebrating Aus, where you can meet other authors and win great prizes!

I am Australian, 110%. I love sports, especially football… men in short shorts, yeah. Sold. I love Milo, Tim Tams, Pavlova and Lamingtons. I grew up in “the bush,” playing capture the flag and laughing at my sister for falling into a creek bed. I love the beach, the sand the tingling sensation of sunburn coming on, how my hair turns blonder over summer because of too much swimming…

As you can tell I can go on and on. Living in the USA, there are times when I find people just don’t get it. Which is ironic to me considering how patriotic people here can be. I get, “How did you survive the snakes and spiders?” I shrug and say, “The same way you do, except with a little less screaming.”

But I miss home terribly. Australia will always be my home. There are times when I get so home sick I just close myself off from the world and pretend I’m back, smelling the eucalyptus fresh scent in the air, listening to the cicadas drone. My heart lies in my country, my home.

I think that’s why my novel end up being set in Australia. While I write I’m back, living in the place I love. Where there are trees. Humidity. (I live in Arizona) Where there are faces I’ve always known, places I’ll never forget.
