Release: Creature of the Night by Anne Stinnett

Blurb:
What promises to be the most sensational season yet of the hit reality competition Creature of the Night is set to premiere. The competition will be fierce, and the challenges will be bloody because the twelve contestants are competing for more than a check and a bit of fame. They are competing for immortality.

To earn it, they will vie for survival before an audience that lurks like a pack of fiends, ready to repay any sign of weakness with jeering applause. At the same time, they must impress a panel of vampire judges, the most approachable of whom is a nightmare out of history. But the real predators are the producers.

The contestants are bursting with bravado and anxiety. They have come to live, and to die. Their ranks include an intellectual desperate for more time, a vampire rights advocate on the verge of disillusionment, and a ballerina who thinks she has nothing to lose. Under scrutiny from the bickering vampires and bloodthirsty audience, the competitors must navigate potentially lethal challenges and, if they ever hope to become undead, stay alive.

Guest Post: The Heroines Journey by G. Miki Hayden

Blurb:
Two girls separated by centuries, one living in the Middle Ages and one in the here and now, find common ground in their heroines’ journeys: the need to forge their own lives and identities and the hope of meeting that one, true love.

Heroines Rule in The Heroine’s Journey

We’ve heard about the Hero’s Journey for most of our lives. That’s the model of what all fiction is supposed to be. But now, we girls and women are coming into our own—the time is up, and today is ours. Our struggles have become noticeable in society and the gender so totally submerged throughout human history is on the rise—and owning our equality with the male.
Yet the truth is that life isn’t all about gender; it’s about finding our authentic selves and being able to live from that with courage and intelligence.

Mostly, though, my novel, The Heroine’s Journey, is meant to be fun. Two girls help each other across the centuries and are clever enough and determined enough to succeed at what they need to do.

Today, this very day, youth is coming into its own and taking hold of the ideals that have been held up in our society while not being entirely enacted. So, hero or heroine, this is our time. Humanity and love will certainly conquer.

Here's an excerpt for a little taste!
"Cinderella," griped Gwen to her best friend Kresta, while the two sat in the noisy cafeteria eating a "Healthful Wednesday" lunch of chow mein. "What was Cinderella's claim to fame? The size of her foot? Give me a break here. So she got the guy. That's it?""You're right," agreed Kresta, tapping a bit more soy sauce from a miniature paper cup onto her food. "She didn't do anything clever or smart. She was just a ‘good' girl. Any luck she stumbled over was by way of the fairy godmother's generosity. Very handy.""Yeah," continued Gwen. "And those females in Shakespeare who dressed like men. What's up with that? They had to hide their gender to achieve anything? That can't be what the Heroine's Journey is all about."The girls stared at one another. Gwen pondered. As two of the members of the boy's basketball team passed the girls' end of the table, Gwen's attention wavered, and Kresta shifted in her chair: Lance Reilly and Jerod Afifa. Gwen's heart rate increased, and her mouth drained of moisture. Although getting the guy wasn't her idea of an ultimate objective, the concept did have a certain pulse-accelerating appeal.Deep in a conversation that demanded hearty peals of male laughter, neither athlete gave the girls a glance.

G. Miki Hayden has published a steady flow of short stories in anthologies, national magazines, and small press publications. She has had a number of novels in print, including Question Woman & Howling Sky, a new adult fantasy set after a series of cataclysmic ecological disasters; Strings, a middle grade fantasy based very loosely on string theory; and The Heroine’s Journey, a young adult mind-meld fantasy spanning many centuries. Miki teaches writing online at Writer’s Digest University, has been on The New York Times summer reading list, and won a short story Edgar.

Guest Post: Shoeburn and the Ill-Fitting Necklace by Shoeburn Ruffet

Blurb:
Shoeburn Ruffet is forced into finding the whereabouts of a business magnate’s lost piece of jewellery. Regina Wendle, the most powerful woman in Welt Foot and the business magnate, will unleash bees, sink phoney submarines, and sabotage helicopter outings until her necklace is found.

Shoeburn will do slightly less exciting stuff to figure out what the necklace’s true purpose is.

The necklace has something to do with him. It has something to do with his father. It may even have something to do with his dead mother, who could or could not be Regina Wendle. Shoeburn does a few heroic things in this story amidst all his blundering, but he’s not really a hero. He just finds himself unable to say ‘no’ in a situation that isn’t about a missing necklace but is instead one in which a necklace goes missing.

He’d just rather not be there at all.

About the Author:

Shoeburn Ruffet has no formal education, thinks chickens should have bigger wings, and has lived half his life with the same suspenders. He spends days looking out a keyhole, and he thinks you know as much about him already as you should ever know.

Tea is his drink of choice, but if it’s too hot it’s not tea anymore and is a third degree burn instead. During his last visit to the graveyard, Shoeburn met four people whom he had forgotten about. He wants you to know that he knows nothing about Regina Wendle or her necklace.

He is constantly rethinking the definition of “private diary literature.”

Guest Post: The Forest Beyond the Earth by Matthew S. Cox

Under the watchful eye of the Mother Shrine, twelve-year-old Wisp ekes out a simple, but challenging life with Dad, foraging for food and losing herself in old books from the world that came before. She loves the Endless Forest―except when the Tree Walkers come for her.

In ages past, the great rain of fire and ash destroyed the Earth, wiping out the ancients and everything they had made. Nature has reclaimed much since then, spreading out in a vast forest full of wonder and dread. Ever in fear of being taken away, she follows Dad’s rules without question while learning to survive off the land.

No longer a small child, she accompanies Dad on one of his treks, her first time more than a few steps away from the cabin. A day exploring with him is the happiest time of her life, but joy is short-lived.

A monster follows them home.

Safe in her Haven, she hides while Dad goes outside to confront the beast. She wakes alone the next morning, and waits. Alas, her hope of his return fades with the daylight. Desperate, she breaks his strictest rule and goes outside alone. Not far from the cabin, she discovers his rifle abandoned next to the monster’s strange footprints.

Afraid but determined, Wisp sets off on her own into the Endless Forest to find Dad―before the Tree Walkers catch her.

Excerpt:

“Where are we going?” asked Wisp.
“There used to be a small settlement a ways north of us. Scavengers have probably been and gone already, but I’m hoping they didn’t take everything. There’s gotta be something of use left there.”
“What’s a settlement?”
He let go of the rifle long enough to pat her on the head. “It’s a place where people used to build houses all close together. Must’ve been a defense tactic. I guess even the ancients had tribes. People banded together for protection. Much easier to defend themselves when they put their cabins all together.”
“Oh, like a city?” Wisp peered up at him. “There’s cities in some of the books. I think ‘towns’ are like the same thing, but smaller. I wonder what it’s like to have so many people around. I think it’s kinda scary.”
“People change, sweetie. Before the dragons came, they weren’t quite as mean to each other as they are now. Back then, you didn’t have to worry so much that any person you ran into would try to hurt you and take all your stuff… or take you.”
“Take me?” She blinked. “Like the Tree Walkers?”
“Not exactly. You remember me telling you about marauders?”
She nodded. “Bad people, but not monsters like the Tree Walkers.”
“Right. They roam in packs, and sometimes they steal people, too.”
“What for?”
“They force them to work. Sometimes they make them fight each other as a sport. A few of their groups even use people for meat.”
She gagged. “Yuck! Well, no one’s going to take me for meat.”
“Nope. You’re way too skinny. They’d throw you back and keep fishing.”
Wisp poked him in the side and raspberried him. “Am not! I don’t taste good.”
“Did you taste yourself?” He glanced back at her.
“No. I just don’t want to taste good. I’ll smear red berry all over me so I look like the firepillars. Red means don’t eat.”
“Right. Maybe that’ll work.” He winked at her.
The ground pitched into a hill, at one point growing so steep she had to grab handfuls of dirt to make the climb. Vines with thousands of tiny prickling thorns scraped at her legs. Dad waited at the top, staring at something in the distance. She pulled herself up enough to see over the ridge, her nose even with ground level, and gaped in awe at a huge metal object covered in runner vines and plants. It had the overall shape of a tube, much bigger than the cabin, and many times longer. Squarish panels resembling windows ran down the length over an angled flat section on the side that had gouged into the ground. The huge beast had a tall, vertical fin opposite a pointy end with more windows. All sorts of junk littered the ground in the area.
“What is that?” she whispered.
“A thunderbird,” said Dad. “A machine from long ago.”
“Like your bullet maker?” She pulled herself past the ridge and stood.
Dad crept toward the wreck. “Only in that they are both machines. This one is far more complicated. I don’t even begin to understand how it worked.”
“Complicated. It’s difficult?” She tiptoed after him.
“I mean it’s got a lot of parts. It’s beyond me to understand how something like this could work. I think they used to fly.”
“Wow… but it looks so heavy.” She pointed at the angled part on the side. “Is that a wing? How did it flap?”
He shrugged. “Magic that has been lost to us. All I know is they used to carry people over great distances, high in the clouds where the Tree Walkers couldn’t reach them.”
Wisp stepped around a tangled mess of metal and placed one foot on the wing above where it dug into the earth. The dull-grey metal warmed the bottom of her foot, but not painfully so. She leaned her weight forward, arms waving to the sides, and walked up to the long, tubular body.
“Be careful,” said Dad.
She squatted beside the curved wall and put her face over the window, shielding her eyes with both hands. Two small fog spots from her nostrils appeared on the plastic. Inside, a few of the seats held desiccated remains, mostly skeletons wearing tattered bits of clothing in styles she’d never imagined. The skeleton nearest her had a dark shirt over his ribs with the word Nike on it.
“It’s a shrine! They’ve all gone to the Other Place,” called Wisp, before lowering her voice. “I’m sorry for disturbing you. I’ll go away now.”
She crawled on all fours down the wing and leapt to the ground. “What’s nikkey?”
“What?” asked Dad.
“A man by the hole had it on his shirt. N-i-k-e. Nikkey.”
“No idea. Could be his name. Some of the marauders do that… write their names on their chest armor.”
She grinned, peering down at her chest where the faded image of a cartoonish bunny rabbit skull stared off into space. “Like my shirt, but it’s not words.”
“I think that was meant to be cute.”
Wisp took a few steps to the side before plunking herself down on a square cushion that resembled the bottom part of a chair. Fortunately, it turned out to be soft. “What’s cute?”
He glanced over at her and cracked up. “You.”
Her eyebrows shifted together. “What?”
Dad stepped toward her. “Well, it means something or someone that, when you look at them, you feel happy enough to want to…” He scooped her up into a hug. “Squeeze them.”
Wisp squealed with laughter.

Release: An Occasionally Grim Fairy Tale by Ann M Noser

Valentine's Day means different things to different people. Honestly, sometimes in the past I hated the date (thought it was a way for couples to make singles feel inferior), but this time around I have something to really celebrate. This year, my beloved fairy tale will become a reality! Which means that this year, Valentine's Day will mean the following: - Princesses and dragons - Shape-shifting nuns and meek scientists - Giants (both good and bad) and royalty (also both good and bad) - Sword fighting and demon hunting - and so much more!
An Occasionally Grim Fairy Tale
Prince Bane Baronne has baby fever. He is in search of a wife with the proper mystical bloodline to bear him the heir of prophecy. Anna Leon is chosen, but Bane only pretends to be Prince Charming. When Anna questions his intentions, she vanishes from the castle. Convinced she is to blame for her younger sister's disappearance, Maria Leon is coerced into the royal marriage instead. She is older, wiser, and should know better--but Bane always gets what he wants. And he is not above using trickery or treachery to do so.
Maria attempts to salvage what she can of a "happily ever after" by working hard to be the best mother and wife. Until the day she learns that every woman who has married into the Baronne line disappears soon after they have produced an heir.
And she is next in line.

Available for purchase on AMAZON starting February 14th, 2018! Also available on Kindle Unlimited.

About the author:
More about me: Growing up an only child, I learned to entertain myself. During summer vacations, my greatest form of exercise consisted of turning the pages of a book. Now I'm all grown up, and full of stories half-written in my head. I have to write them down so I can find out what happens next.
What I enjoy: Writing, reading, being a small animal veterinarian, trail running, being a mom (although sometimes the hours do not promote good sleeping) and wife, and yoga (not saying I'm good at it, just that I enjoy it)

Why I wrote this book: Almost thirteen years ago I became a mother to my son. I had no idea how over-protective I would become over this little baby. That's why I started writing this book -- because new moms have so much free time, I thought I'd pick up a new hobby. Makes total sense, right? I've written several other books since then, but kept coming back to revise and rewrite this one -- my first writing love, so to speak. So happy it will finally be out in the world, and I sure hope the world enjoys it!

Promise: A Christmas Novella
Melody Winter
Publication date: December 5th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance
Charlotte Walker and Adam Middleton were childhood sweethearts until the day he and his family disappeared. All he left Charlotte was a scrappy piece of paper with a few throwaway words:
‘I’ll never forget you. I promise.’

Retreating to a remote cabin to spend a quiet Christmas holiday alone, Charlotte is determined to push the ghost of Adam into the past and focus on moving forward with the rest of her life.
But when a bearded man knocks on the cabin door on Christmas Eve, could he hold the answer to Charlotte’s years of heartache?

Author Bio:
Growing up, Melody Winter showed a natural ability in art, a head for maths, and a tendency to write far too long English essays. Difficult to place in the world when she graduated, she pursued a career in teaching, but eventually ended up working in finance. Melody is convinced that the methodical time she spends working with numbers fuels her desire to drift into dream worlds and write about the illusory characters in her head.
Melody lives in North Yorkshire, England, with her husband and two teenage sons. When not dealing with football, rugby, and a whole plethora of ‘boy’ activities, she will be found scribbling notes for her stories, or listening to 80’s music on her IPod.
Melody has a tendency to fall head-over-heels in love with her main characters, even when they frustrate her and refuse to act the way she wants them to. She is a romance writer at heart and loves reading and writing about anything mythological or magical, as well as exploring the gritty side of love affairs and the complexities of being in love.

Review: Falling for a Fraud (Star Bride Chronicles #2) by Betsy Love

From Goodreads:
“Beauty is skin deep, but ugly is to the bone.”

That’s what Kat’s grandfather used to say. With the global games only a few months away, her jump team encounters serious financial troubles. Their only chance is for Kat to take the enticing, though questionable investment offer from Lorenzo Watt. One look at his handsome face reminds her of Granddah’s warning. She wonders if Lorenzo is worth the risk of a deeper look.

Lorenzo knows his looks are a commodity, an asset to charm and manipulate gorgeous women into marrying off-worlders. To him, it’s just a job that repays a debt.

Complications arise when he is assigned to lure Kat into being a starbride. He didn’t expect her to be quite so challenging, nor did he anticipate the lure of her beauty.

My Thoughts:
This is the second book in the Star Brides series by Betsy Love, and it's as sweet as the first! What I enjoyed most about this is that the "villain" from the first book was turned around and his background exposed. I do't want to giveaway spoilers, but I enjoyed seeing the motives behind his betrayal in the first book.
Also, since the book remained on Earth, the world was developed more. I can feel it snapping together piece by piece as the series continues, and I'm eager to learn how Earth got to be "ruled" by an alien race and everyone is okay with that.
This is a sweet, clean romance for all those people out there who are always asking me for feel good reads. You're welcome. And Love, keep them coming!

Excerpt

(This story has two points of view )
“I am a demon, Celina, and above all else, demons love the hunt.” He smirked when her eyes widened. “So, you see having sex with someone as a hunt?” He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. “By your expression, I would say you still do not quite understand.” “It’s your twisted logic.” Interesting… “I take my time, stalk my prey first, count the number of breaths she takes, imagine her screams…” She arched an eyebrow. “That’s not at all creepy.” Kai ignored her. “I am a creature of infinite time; the world creeps by, yet an intimate moment is so fleeting, it feels as though it is gone in less than a second.” He stopped, expecting an interruption again, but she stayed silent. “The pleasure is heightened by the danger, and in the throes of passion, I could lose my control and revert to the form least likely to be found pleasurable by my … partner?” He lost himself in the images in his mind, pinning down Celina’s body, taking her in a way she would never be able to recreate with a mere mortal man. “Hunting is simple. There is always one in the crowd that stands out—rarely is it the one searching for the one-night stand—no…” Kai locked his eyes with hers and goose bumps rose on her arms and legs. “No, the one unsure of what society wants her to be, the one who is desperate to be loved and appreciated. She is the one I seek.” “So, social outcasts are your type?” His eyes pierced her until he could see through her mind again, to all those curious little fantasies. He smiled. “It’s about finesse, Celina. I listen to her, and as she speaks more confidently, I brush a hand over her skin”—his hand skimmed Celina’s neck as he brushed her back—“just enough so she shivers with anticipation of what my lips would feel like in the same spot.” He delved into Celina’s mind as his words worked against her disdain for him. “Then I caress her in a way she won’t notice, but her subconscious will let her lean into, let her mind take over and her body will beg for more.” “She’d notice if…” She followed his gaze to his hand on her knee. “Are you certain?” He’d worked his own body into a sensual frenzy as he’d drawn her into his web. She stared at him, her cheeks flushing. “I—” “Eventually, I suggest a night filled with pleasure.” He couldn’t contain his smile as he moved closer. “I keep touching her in small ways—maintaining physical contact at all times.” His hand inched up her side, until he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She sucked in a breath and he cupped her cheek. He sat close to her and her scent calmed and excited him at the same time. “Kai?” Her voice wavered. “Sex is fleeting.” He took her chin and drew her close. “But intimacy is endless, a continuous moment of gentle touches”—his hand dropped back to her knee, and then made its way up her thigh until she let out a small gasp—“personal boundaries broken, and pleasures that go beyond sex.” She sat as if frozen. “It’s still a one-night stand.” “Mine last longer—and you reveal not only your body.” His hand moved to the middle of her chest. “When you are intimate with a demon, you reveal your soul. You make yourself vulnerable and open.” “Considering you’ll have my soul sometime soon, I’m not giving you a free sample.” She drew away from him and stood. “I won’t be your prey tonight.” Another surge of heat rushed through him, but he pushed it down with a long, deep breath. “You would set me loose on another human?” She glared at him. “I wasn’t aware I had a choice about what you do outside of our deal. This would be on you, not me.” “You think you control what I do within our deal?” She rubbed her arms when he stood. “Not when you say it like that.” “Celina…” He stopped in front of her and leaned into her personal space, drawing a lungful of a scent he would only ever associate with her. He wrapped his arms around her, swallowing the shiver that shook her body. “What are you—?” “Let’s play, Celina. I can assure you, you will not regret a night in my arms.” I want you… Against all my instincts, I need you close. Celina pushed him as hard as she could, and he withdrew as disappointment withered his gaze. “Let me go, Mekaisto.” You are trembling again, my dove… Is it because you are scared you will give in? How far can I push you until you bend? “What if I say no?” She glared at him, but Kai’s smile widened. He could feel, even smell, the pulsing between her legs begging him to take her. “Isn’t it enough you’re getting my life and my soul? Now you need my body, too?” She pushed against him again, but he only held tighter, unable to let her go. “Why are you doing this? I just lost my husband, found out things that break my heart. I can’t sit and flirt with you.” “I am offering you the chance to forget.” “No!” Her hands clenched to fists as she shoved even harder against his chest. “No! You want to take everything I have left.” He grabbed her wrists, pushed her back on the sofa, and pinned her down, his body hovering over her. “What is your life without your body?” He tilted his head and flicked his tongue across his lips. “You never asked what selling your life and soul meant specifically. Allow me to enlighten you now.” He moved until his face loomed only an inch or so from her face and her breath caught. He let go of her wrists, but his gaze pinned her to the spot. “What?” Her voice ached just above a whisper. “I own every inch of you … body and soul.” Her face flushed and her lips trembled. “I never agreed to that!” “You agreed to living. The details did not matter to you.” “I was dying! You told me I didn’t have much time left, so it—” His smile widened. “Even if you had all the time in the world, it would not have made a difference. Humans never read the fine print.”

Review: The Captain and the Healer's Heart by Besty Love

From Goodreads:
With an impending murder charge, Giada must escape Earth before the Amahrian enforcers find her. Desperate, she accepts an offer to be a StarBride to a wealthy governor on another planet. What she didn’t account for was the handsome and irksome pilot whose only thoughts are about profits.

Captain Skyler Rohn can’t go back to Earth; he’s a wanted man, and he needs money to prove his innocence. When a job offer comes in that pays handsomely to transport a StarBride, Skyler can’t resist. His ship damaged, Skyler’s only choice is to land on a habitable moon before their oxygen runs out.

If only Giada and Skyler had met before she had agreed to be another man’s wife.

My Thoughts:
I had the wonderful privileged of reading this before its release. This book brings back the feel-good in reading, a true escapism. It's light, short, and easy to read, while still having a well thought out plot and characters. A sweet romantic tale with adorable characters for people who enjoy reading light space opera. I can't wait to read the rest of this series!

Book Blurb:
Athena Harrow is about to turn twenty-one, but there will be no celebration. What is there to celebrate when the world is ruled by demons?
She hates the darkness the demons brought with them and longs for the light to return to the world—a world she only vaguely remembers. The people in her forest village blindly accept the life the demons forced upon them, even tolerating the yearly ascension ceremony where all the girls who have turned twenty-one are either sent away to serve the Master Demon or left in the village and forced to procreate.
But Paymon, the assigned village demon, selects a different role for Athena, a role that pits her against the village. While she adapts to her new life, Erebus, a younger, more powerful demon, arrives, and Athena must play a dangerous game with his emotions in return for information about the demon’s reign of darkness.
As Athena’s dreams of restoring the light begin to fade, her life with Erebus takes an unexpected turn, and this time it’s her life being put to the test.
Set in the forest around Buttercrambe in North Yorkshire, England, INIQUITY explores the frightening, darker side of romance and the uncontrolled emotions it can unleash.

This steampunk adventure is littered with facts from The Golden Age of Piracy and follows (not too closely) some of the lives and adventures of the brave men and women who sailed the seas as privateers, pirates and soldiers.

How you created the plot for this book around what you learned from your family history.

Hi! Thank you so much for having me on your blog. This is an excellent question that I don’t think anyone has ever asked me before. The idea for the series came from, as you mentioned, a story I discovered while doing family history research. One of my ancestors was a Daughter of the King (a girl adopted by King Louis the IVX and sent to Canada to pick a husband and help settle Quebec) but because she was a good girl and did her part for her country without any issues, there isn’t much information about her personally. There is a LOT of information about girls who didn’t follow the rules or decided to do their own thing in Canada.
This got me wondering. What would make a nice girl from a good family (the Daughters of the King were all recruited from upstanding families in France, some were even nobles) want to leave her cushy life and sail across the pirate infested Atlantic ocean to pick out a soldier husband and settle down? It was a really fun game of “what if” that I actually dwelled on for a few years. I went back and forth from a bad family life, to a kidnapping situation. None of that felt right. Then the image of a girl came to me that fit exactly the kind of character I would want to write about. She was rich, beautiful, popular, completely spoiled, and had a lot of growing up to do. But there had to be things about her that made you want to stick with her. Even rich beautiful people have trials, so I gave her a mean governess with ulterior motives, a best friend below her station that is heading off on adventure without her, an absentee father who is trying to marry her off to the highest bidder, and a passion for machinery. When this all came together in my mind, I knew I had the right combination for a great story. After that it was all downhill. The more research I did about the era, the life styles, fashion, and pirates, the more excited I got and the faster the story flowed. I love writing about characters that start out borderline despicable and then redeem themselves. I feel like it has the biggest payoff in the end and if you do it right.
However, at the end of the first book, I felt like Marguerite was just starting to come into her own and learn the things that she needed to learn. I also felt like I didn’t get to spend enough time with the pirates, so that led to a natural path for the second book— pirates and more shenanigans!
I hope you enjoy reading the series as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Marguerite does grow up in the end, eventually, I promise!

OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES

Lady Marguerite lives a life most 17th century French girls can only dream of: Money, designer dresses, suitors and a secure future. Except, she suspects her heart may be falling for her best friend Claude, a common smithie in the family’s steam forge. When Claude leaves for New France in search of a better life, Marguerite decides to follow him and test her suspicions of love. Only the trip proves to be more harrowing than she anticipated. Love, adventure and restitution await her, if she can survive the voyage.

Leigh Statham was raised in the wilds of rural Idaho, but found her heart in New York City. She worked as a waitress, maid, artist, math teacher, nurse, web designer, art director, thirty-foot inflatable pig and mule wrangler before she settled down in the semi-quiet role of wife, mother and writer. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, four children, five chickens and two suspected serial killer cats. If the air is cool and the sun is just coming up over the horizon, you can find her running the streets of her small town, plotting her next novel with the sort of intensity that will one day get her hit by a car.
