Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh Turns One!

I cannot believe a year has passed since my debut novel released. What an amazing year it has been! The support, the new friendships I have made, the things I have learned are all invaluable.
Since its release, the rest of the trilogy has also become available, and I've gone on to contract several more books. It's available as ebook, paperback, audio book and soon in hardback as well. Kiya has done an incredible job at kick starting my writing career. To to celebrate, and say thank you, I am hosting this blog hop with prizes to find along the way. I will giveaway copies of Kiya and critiques to participants of the hop. For the details, go here

For my 500 word short story, I'm going to do a short Horemheb perspective. As per the game, please add to it in the comments in 365 words or less. Commenters go in the running for prizes!

He paused outside, knowing if he entered prematurely he could face possible execution. But with Kiya gone, he didn’t feel like he had much else to lose. He burst through the door, and found himself looking across a round courtyard with a pool in the middle. Women gathered in, whispering to each other, and across the other side of the room, he saw Ay with Nefertiti. That meant Akhenaten was somewhere nearby.
“Where’s the king?” he demanded.
One of the concubines turned to him and pointed down a hallway.
He rushed down it, and near the end, found Gerlind sobbing in Abi’s arms. Abi held onto her, her cheeks wet, but she remained composed.
“What has happened?” Horemheb asked.
Gerlind jumped and looked up at him. “You!”
Abi pulled her behind her. “Commander, Mordad is dead.”
“What? How?”
Akhenaten stepped out of the dark room beside them. His head hung, as he spoke in a low voice. “My wives have turned against one another. My beloved Kiya is gone, and my dear Mordad now lies dead from an asp planted to kill Kiya.”
“My lord.” Abi hurried over and touched his face. “Gerlind and I remain.”
Gerlind nodded and grabbed his hand. “Yes, we will remain at your side.”
He half smiled, but his head fell. “Commander?”
“Yes, my lord?”
“How do I know what love is when my heart is torn from me by the very people who claim to love me?”
Horemheb didn’t know how to answer. He shook his head. “No man knows love like you, my lord.”
Akhenaten lifted his head and glared down the hall. “I wish I could…” He huffed. “Why do I still love her?”
“Who?”
Akhenaten lowered his voice. “That vicious creature Nefertiti.” He ran his hand over his face and tossed his crown to the ground.
Horemheb flinched and plucked it up. “My lord―”
“Did you see Kiya flee, Horemheb? Is she safe?”
He nodded. “She disappeared before the horn sounded―”
“And why didn’t you go with her? Hmm?”
Horemheb paused, seeing the ice in Akhenaten’s eyes. He knew how he felt for her, he had to know. “I need to remain here with you.”
Akhenaten sneered. “Ah yes, loyal to the crown aren’t we, Commander? I bet you only stayed to ensure her son gets that once I die.” He motioned at the crown in Horemheb’s hand.
Horemheb lifted it to him. “He’s your son, my lord.”
Akhenaten snatched it from him. “I have no one left to trust. Kiya kept everything together. She gave me love and devotion where everyone else feigned it. I am alone. Completely alone to bear this burden.” He waved the crown in the air.
Horemheb shook his head. “My lord, I still…”
Akhenaten shoved his chest. “You desire my Kiya. You only remain loyal for her.”

This is from The Princess of Tyrone again! It's just too fun to pass up. Plus I'm working through the rest of the FairyTale Galaxy Chronicles as we speak. This is just a scene to show how awkward the fairies can be. So enjoy!
The fairy glanced back at him and smiled. "You're hot.""Excuse me?" His eyebrows shot right up."Hot. Yes, very hot.""Ah, I'm betrothed." She chuckled. "Not that hot. Hot."

Guest Post and Sale: Claiming Fantasy Hen Lit by Joanne Guidoccio

It’s officially mine.

After Googling “fantasy hen lit” and discovering my picture, the book cover of Between Land and Sea, and several images from my website on the first page of search results, I claimed the new sub-genre as my own.

A bit of history...

I never intended to write fantasy. I avoided books that featured werewolves, vampires, witches and other dark creatures and am probably one of the few people on this planet who could not read past Chapter 1 of the first Harry Potter novel. But after participating in a series of science fiction workshops, I decided to try my hand at light and breezy fantasy with inspirational elements. Whenever I described my work to other writers in the workshop, they would frown and ask, “But what genre is that?”

Caught up in the storyline, I smiled and continued writing about an overweight, middle-aged ex-mermaid who was struggling to embrace her new body and heal her bruised heart. To facilitate the adjustment process, I introduced a magic tablet with online mermaid support, but the fantasy elements do not consume the story. The focus is primarily on empowerment; the mermaid angle adds depth to the storyline.

In early query letters, I described the book as urban fantasy. That did not sit well with one agent who commented that my novel was too light to be considered urban fantasy. Her suggestion: Use “contemporary women’s fiction with fantasy elements” in future queries. I used that mouthful several times and was relieved when senior editor Debby Gibson of Soul Mate Publishing classified Between Land and Sea as a paranormal romance.

Confusion followed when the book was released on Amazon. One friend confided: “When I heard it was a paranormal romance, I assumed you were writing about witches or werewolves. I’m so glad to hear you’re writing about mermaids.”

Still wondering about the “right” descriptor, I started reading articles about literary genres and sub-genres and came across an interview with literary agent Jenny Bent. Asked about the future of chick-lit, Ms. Bent replied, “I think if there’s any future for chick lit, it will be in paranormal chick lit or multicultural chick lit or in mom lit or hen lit.”

I dismissed the first three predictions and zeroed in on hen lit. I discovered that these books focus on older female characters (aged 40 to 65) as protagonists and address such themes as giving birth after age forty, dealing with three generations living in the same house, dating after divorce or widowhood, and launching second (third or fourth) careers.

Bingo!

I had found the perfect descriptor for Between Land and Sea. To address the mermaid element, I added fantasy.

Now, if I could only persuade editors, publishers, Amazon, Barnes & Noble...

BIO
In high school, I dabbled in poetry, but decided to wait until I had more life experiences before writing a novel. The original plan was to get a general arts degree and take a few years off to travel and write. Instead, I gave in to my practical Italian side and obtained degrees in mathematics and education.

While I experienced many satisfying moments during my teaching career, I never found the time and energy to write. In 2008, I took advantage of early retirement. Slowly, a writing practice emerged, and my articles and book reviews started appearing in newspapers, magazines and online. Between Land and Sea, a paranormal romance about a middle-aged mermaid, was released by Soul Mate Publishing on September 17, 2013.

I live and write in Guelph, Ontario.

Blog Tour: Destruction by Sharon Bayliss

The butterfly...yet another symbol. It stands for re-birth, hope, and change.

When I think about book "themes" it reminds me of high school English class. Who knew I would actually use that info later? :) I'm still waiting to find a practical application for calculus.

Destruction, and all the books in The December People, do have significant themes woven throughout the story. Here are a few:

Darkness and light: The visual and symbolic darkness vs. light comes up constantly. Since Destruction is about dark wizards, they struggle to learn what darkness really means, and it's many different facets are explored.

"We do not believe that light exists in spite of darkness. We believe that light exists because of it.
Darkness is the only fertile ground for light. It is the only garden where light can be sown."

"This darkness didn’t feel frightening. In fact, David couldn’t remember ever feeling so safe. The darkness was the foundation that everything else was built on. The garden where the universe grew. The simplest, most basic thing in existence. And it was spectacular.

He supposed that was the answer that waited for him. That darkness in itself was not evil. Darkness was peace. Potential. Home."

Destruction: Well, that's a no-brainer. :) This concept was important enough that I made it the title. Dark magic is destructive. And, so are other acts, like abuse and rape. The story considers what can actually destroy a person.

"That’s why dark wizards can’t practice. Even if they want to be good, they can’t. It’s too dangerous. Dark magic is about destruction. Breaking things. Breaking people."

"If you want to make a case for magic, why don’t you do something a little more interesting than breaking glass? Anyone can break glass. You don’t need magic. Glass is easy to break. It’s one of its defining qualities. Where’s the challenge? What’s the point?"

"Destruction is easy. Dark magic is like stabbing someone in the heart. And good magic is like performing heart surgery to fix it. Almost no one can do it."

"Obviously, Emmy is not fine. But you know what, if she doesn’t end up getting herself killed tonight because of you, she will be fine. Eventually. So will Samantha. They can heal. You can’t."

Love: The story is not a romance, but I still think that love and family are some of the most important themes. Love is what keeps the dark characters from truly becoming evil. In the story, we have "talismans." A talisman is basically is a person who loves you and who you love, and that keeps you from evil. I believe that kind of magic is the real deal.

"He said only people can be talismans, and those talismans work. They are the most powerful kind of magic."

"I knew the magic inside me was a bad thing. But if I had never met you, I don’t know what would have happened. When I fell in love with you… it was like the gap inside me wasn’t as big anymore. I could cope. The whole world looked different."

Spirituality and Religion: The wizards in the story are Baptist, and have to deal with the complexity of understanding themselves within the Christian tradition.

"As nice as it is to think I can cast a spell and protect my family on my own… I feel safer knowing I’ve consulted an expert.”
“You mean God?”
“Yes, I mean God.”

“What you are is different from what you believe. We can believe whatever we choose to.”
“Do you believe in God?”
“Yes.”
“Do you believe in the Devil?”
“Yes.”
“Can wizards get into Heaven?”
“They have the same chance as everyone else.”
“But you don’t know for sure.”
“Emmy, no one knows for sure. Not about any of this.”

There are even more themes that I didn't mention, the four seasons, good vs. evil, etc. And each book has new symbols for the season they represent. The summer book involves a lot of symbolism about heat, light, and fire. The spring book has themes of life vs. death and resurrection.
