Review: Daughter of Camelot by Glynis Cooney

From Goodreads: Filled with terrific suspense and budding romance, Daughter of Camelot is a fast paced adventure set against the turmoil at the end of the Arthurian era.

Raised in the shadow of a fort dedicated to training Knights of the Round Table, Deirdre thirsts for adventure.

Instead, at 14, she is sent to court to learn the etiquette and talents of a young woman.

Court life, however, is more fraught with danger than she expected, and Deirdre finds herself entangled in a deadly conspiracy that stretches deep into the very heart of Camelot.

All Deirdre thought she knew and believed in—loyalty, love, bravery—is challenged when she embarks on a quest to defy Fate and save the King.

Note: This is a Netgalley. I received this free for an honest review.

So, the cover on this is pretty boring, but the story isn't. It starts off slowly. The main character, Deirdre, is very young, sheltered and naive. As a result, she comes across a little bratty to begin with. But, as she faces the real world and struggles with what it means to be a lady in a world ripping apart at the seams, she is forced to grow up very quickly. In the end, she has grown and developed enormously.
Her sister, Nia, has good intentions for her, but while she tries to protect Deirdre, she ends up doing more harm than good by not telling her things she should know.
Deirdre makes friends with another young lady, Sioned, who becomes her traveling companion. Sioned is the perfect friend for Deirdre as she wants to look out for her, but she's open to teaching her a guiding her. I think without Sioned, Deirdre would have failed and probably would have ended up dead. Sioned's gentle hand and spirit make her incredibly strong.
Deirdre's twin, Rhys you don't see all that much of, but he is important not only because of the love she holds for him, but because she wants to prove herself as capable as he is.
My favorite characters are by far Dewey and Ronan. Both are brave and, although unconventional, they are the truest knights in the story.
All in all, a good read for anyone who enjoys Arthurian tales. It follows the legend, but gives it a new angle, from a "normal" person's perspective. As I said, it starts off a little slow, but once it's rolling, it snowballs. I'd be happy to follow on with the rest of this series.

Excerpt:

COLE THOMAS HAD BEEN a late bloomer. One of the smallest boys in their middle school,

he’d disappeared to his uncle’s ranch in Wyoming the summer before high school and had

come back six inches taller, wearing a cowboy hat. Kiley St. Claire doubted the woman he was

currently flirting with remembered that. It was practically ancient history.

She squinted as she tried to remember the woman’s name. Cole’s fangirl looked vaguely

familiar under her over-processed blond hair and cheap but abundant makeup. She was

probably one of Cole and Kiley’s former classmates. Amber maybe, or one of the Ashleys.

She was pretty—whatever her name was—and she had a fantastic rack. More importantly,

she wasn’t wearing a cheap Bavarian Miss costume and pigtails like Kiley was. If they were

competing, the babe with the penchant for bleach and blue eye shadow would win. They

weren’t, of course. Kiley was done crushing on Cole. It was obvious—had been for years—that

he’d never see her as more than a friend.

She straightened the red bodice that made even her own modest chest look full, pulled the

notepad from her already sticky apron, and marched over to their table. Her heels clicked along

the scuffed and murky wood floor. No doubt it had originally been a beautiful walnut. Now it was

covered with a layer of scum as old as she was and fit right in with the rest of the decor.

The entire bar was filled with heavy, dark wood tables and stools covered in faded maroon vinyl.

Kept clean and under the right lighting it had probably once been genuinely attractive. Probably.

If that had ever been the case it had stopped the day Kiley’s boss, the infamous Buddy, bought

the building and started filling it with kitschy, vaguely German-themed knick-knacks and neon

beer signs. Cole and the blonde were sitting near a display of Hummel knock-offs, one of which

appeared to be mooning the patrons.

A table full of afternoon-drunk Frat guys signaled to Kiley. She held up a single finger in

acknowledgement. They could use a couple minutes before their next round, and she had to do

this, face Cole, before she lost her nerve. “Are you guys ready to order, or do you need another

minute with the menus?”

“Kiley?” Cole’s dark eyes widened for a second before he started laughing. His shoulders

shook, and he slapped the worn wooden tabletop. “This is…” He gestured toward her.

“This…oh, you gotta give a turn.” He circled a finger in the air.

“Do you want a beer or not?” She refused to be embarrassed. Yes, she was dressed like the

St. Pauli girl, but it obviously hadn’t been her idea. She didn’t even like wearing costumes on

Halloween.

“I heard you were coming back for the summer, but this…damn.”

“School’s expensive, Cole, and there aren’t a lot of summer jobs in this town.” Barrett, Vermont

was a pretty little town, not a thriving metropolis. If there had been other options, any other

options, she wouldn’t be dressed like slutty Gretel serving beer and waffles in a Bavarian-
themed restaurant owned by a man who’d never traveled farther than Montreal.

Cole looked her up and down with a big grin on his too-handsome face. Kiley pretended not to

notice that his thick, brown hair was a touch longer than the last time she’d seen him, or that it

curled appealingly against the collar of his blue-green plaid shirt. She tried not to check the scar

on his left arm—a thin jagged line that was only really noticeable when the skin around it tanned

a shade or two darker. Her heart melted a little when she saw it.

Cole had only recently turned eight the night they went searching for Kiley’s runaway dog. He

got tangled in a bit of barbed wire fence hidden amongst the leaves in the woods behind her

neighbor’s house. The dog came home on his own later that night, but Cole ended up needing

stitches in four places. And a tetanus shot. He made her promise not to tell anyone he’d cried,

and she drew a cross over her heart and wished for untold tortures if she broke her word.

She still hadn’t.

“So why’d you come then?”

Kiley shrugged. Way to make a girl feel welcome, Cole. “It’s home.”

“Wasn’t enough to bring you home last Christmas, or the one before.”

Yup. She was a horrible daughter, and her mom let the whole town know it. Mother dearest

undoubtedly left out that Kiley couldn’t afford to pay for a rental car sturdy enough to make the

several-hour trip in wintry weather.

Before she had a chance to respond, the blonde sitting with Cole tilted her head to the side and

frowned at her. “I remember you.” She smiled then, broadly, as though remembering anything

was an accomplishment worthy of her pride.

Kiley tried to smile at the woman, but her lips were too tight. “Go Bobcats,” she said weakly.

“Yeah, you were in my gym class. Didn’t you get hit in the face with a tennis ball one time?”

Kiley had long ago accepted that, despite the lack of any reasonable scientific explanation, her

face clearly attracted sporting equipment. She’d absolutely gotten hit with a tennis ball, as well

as a volleyball, a softball, and a Frisbee. Once she’d even managed to get wacked in the nose

with a broom while they’d attempted to play a grounded version of Quidditch. “Yup, that was

me.”

The other woman nodded. “I knew it. I’ve always been good with faces.”

“Wow. Catching up is super fun, but I have a bunch of tables. So…”

“Were you even going to give me a call?” Cole looked hurt, and Kiley wished she didn’t care.

“Sure. Once I got settled and all, I—”

“Right.” He scowled. “Why don’t you bring us a couple of drafts. Whatever’s on special is fine.”

His cool tone sliced through her resolve and made her stomach churn. Why couldn’t she just

move on? Being Cole’s friend, watching him date every other girl in town, hurt too much. She’d

promised herself she wouldn’t fall back into his well-meaning but clueless clutches this summer.

Kiley had come home to work and to save up enough money to live on for the final semester

of classes she needed to earn her Master’s in Meteorology. That’s it. She already had job

prospects for after graduation in January. This would be her last summer at home.

She nodded. “I’ll be right back with your drinks.”

He’d already turned back to the blonde.

“Who’s that for?” A smooth male voice pulls me from my work.
I place the last white flower into the vase, and spin it, checking appearance at all angles. “This is actually for no one in particular, Sid.” I shrug to my best friend and employee.
“Come on, G,” he coaxes, using my nickname for effect.
I sigh. “I’m just puttin’ it together. They’re my flowers, so who cares why I arrange them?”
“Yes, I’m well aware who my boss is,” he deadpans. “I’ve seen you at work, and I’ve seen you work. There’s a difference.”
I glance up to him. His eyebrow is arched, daring me to deny what he’s said. His blue eyes are drilling into mine, knowing that I’m hiding something. If I hadn’t known him since grade school, I’d ignore him and tell him to mind his own business. But this is Sid, one of my best friends, who will eventually pull out my mystery flower messenger anyway. Quickly, I remind myself why I’ve hired him to begin with. I can trust him, and he’s known me for so long he knows how to help me and not be a distraction.
I blow out a slow breath of resignation as I side step him, placing the vase on the wide windowsill. “When I left my house this morning, there were four white carnations on my porch. There was no note either, so I just brought them here. And I can’t sell them - they’re not mine.”
His usually smiling mouth opens and closes like a fish sucking for air. “So you just bring stoop flowers in here?” While his eyes usually seem hooded, giving him that lazy surfer look, now his eyelids widen as his eyebrows disappear under the baseball cap that’s hiding his shaggy blonde hair, making his pastel blue eyes pop wide. The more he sputters, the more his nostrils flare. “Go wash up! There could’ve been poison on them!”
I burst out laughing. “Sid, calm your conspiracies. Who would poison carnations?” Ever since middle school, he’s always had crazy conspiracies. The teachers had a hidden agenda with pop quizzes and homework. Parents having evil plans by giving us chores, and then there was the driver’s license hoax. Thankfully we’re interrupted by the bell chimes above the door.
I work to calm my rolling hysterics, taking a deep breath, and trying to think about anything other than poisoned carnations or Sid as I walk to the front of my store. “Welcome to G-Quets. I’m Georgina, can I help you?” I ask to the back of someone’s head.
The man spins around so fast he’s a blur and wraps his arms around me, pulling me into a huge bear hug. “G-G! Is this your store?”
That voice, the familiar husky scratch.

Are you a plotter or a panster?

This is a post I did over at Aussie Owned and Read a few months back, and since my blog is quiet at the moment, I thought I'd repost for your enjoyment.
Are you a plotter or a panster?
I put this question out to my fellow Aussie Owneder's and found out what they were.
Our Plotters: Lauren, Emily
Pansters: Me, K.A Last, Sharon
A bit of both: Cass, Stacey, Susan
Since I am a great big panster, I needed to find out how plotters work. So I talk to the lovely ladies and also took it to the AZ Typelings because I knew there was at least one plotter there who could tell me about her process. So, now I can talk about both! Ah ha!
So basically a plotter is someone who plans out their WiP before sitting down and writing it out. A panster, on the other hand, gets an idea in their head and goes with it.
A plotter can do their planning in several ways. Some write out scenes in points, some write out a few sentences about each chapter, some structure it with, to quote little Emily, "introduction, theme stated, set-up, catalyst, main question of the protagonist, B story, fun stuff, midpoint, TERRIBLE DISASTER, finale." Either way, they have a fair idea what's going to happen and approximately how long the manuscript will be when it is completed. They can see the story as a whole before they start drafting.
As a panster, I can say that when I think up a story, I usually only know each scene as they come. I'll start with a concept and roll with it. As I write I think up how it will end, and with that in mind, I let the characters and plot take me from point A to point Z, and yes, sometimes things happen and I'm completely blindsided by them!
There are pro's and con's to each. I know I've tried plotting and grew bored of the story before I even finished it, so scrapped it because it felt too predictable for me. But, a plotter can see everything before it happens, they can know what to expect word count wise and so forth, whereas I write out a first draft and have to go back and tie up lose ends in a second draft, and sometimes cut chunks out because the story is just too long.
Honestly, neither works better than the other. But one will work better for YOU. Don't let anyone tell you what to do, or that you should try what you're not comfortable with, because you're the one writing it, you're the one creating the world and characters, so only you can know what's going to work for you.
So what are you? A plotter or a panster? How do you construct your story?

Blog Tour: Mackenzie's Cross by @SEBarthel

Mackenzie's Cross
by Sarah Barthel
Publication: May 12, 2013 by Topaz Publishing
Genre: YA Historical

Mackenzie’s life has always been one of duty. However, in a land where even the Brotherhood of the Knights are becoming power hungry mongers, how can a young kitchen maid maintain her morals when tempted with all she’s never had? In the end, the truth is even more complicated than Mackenzie had ever imagined.

** Winner of the Topaz Publishing Publisher Award **

If it had been anyone else's voice, Mackenzie wouldn't have rushed, but Melissa was not one to draw attention to herself.
Upon entering the room, Mackenzie rushed directly to the small crowd which had gathered around Melissa and the corner carving table. Pushing her way to the center of the commotion, she stopped beside Melissa. She was so focused that she didn't hear the whisperings around her. When she finally reached Melissa, Mackenzie exclaimed, "My goodness, Melissa. What's wrong?"
Instead of speaking, Melissa pointed above the carving table. Mackenzie glanced up, and lost her breath for a moment. The carver's knives were hanging in a row. The largest knife was in its proper place, but blood dripped down the silver blade and created a puddle on the table. Such omens could destroy happy festivities.
"What does it mean?” One of the pages whispered. "To be sure, death and destruction is upon us," another replied.
Mackenzie glanced around the kitchen for Adilla, but could not make out her form. Someone had to squash the panic forming in the crowd; unfortunately, that person had to be her. Mimicking Adilla, she clapped her hands and looked over the crowd. "We have far too much to accomplish to worry over childhood stories. In the excitement of the day, much has been forgotten. I'm certain that's what happened here. Now, get back to work. I don't want Adilla to discover that many precious minutes were wasted over a dirty knife."
As the crowd dispersed, Mackenzie caught Squire John staring at her from the doorway. Once people were doing as they should, she turned her attention back to Melissa.
"I'm sure Laura simply forgot to wash this knife." Mackenzie tried to sooth her friend.
"Laura would never forget." Melissa lowered her voice and leaned closer to Mackenzie. "She knows what such a vision means."
"What does it mean?" Squire John's voice rang clear, making Melissa squeal again. Mackenzie waved her hand to the few who looked up, bidding them go back to work.
Melissa's voice broke into a husky whisper. "When a bloody knife is found hanging, as this one, it means something disastrous is going to happen."

I am so excited to reveal this cover for my first non-Kiya book. I love this cover and I hope you like it too!

Blurb:

Terrorists have invaded Sydney, and Allison King barely escapes her brother’s wedding reception alive. She and her siblings flee, but their parents are killed by firing squad.

Now Ali’s on the run and terrified. While searching for other survivors, she is captured by the General who leads the invasion. He’s smitten by Ali, and when she refuses to submit to his whims, he brands her for death. In a wild act of defiance, she snatches the branding rod and sears the mark onto his face. Marking not only him but also sealing her fate. Ali manages to escape and flees into the bush once more where she finds a group in hiding. Even with the scars left by the General, Ali learns to love and falls in love with the young man who found her—Damien Rogers.
But the General is hunting her. When he discovers their location, and finds her with another man—Damien—his wrath is kindled and his obsession is inflamed. Ali must put herself on the line or the General could kill her family, those who help her, and most significantly, the man she loves.

Excerpt:

The man ordered the soldiers to wait outside and he shut the door behind us. He stepped up behind me and ran his fingers through my hair. "You smell awful."
"Good."
He chuckled and ran his hands over my hips. "I think I'll send you to get washed first."
I pulled away in disgust. He snatched my hair and pulled me back against him. His arm wrapped around my waist and he held me tight.
"You should be flattered. I'm the General who led the takeover of the Sydney region. I'm very powerful, and don't usually take an interest in filthy western women." He let go of my hair and wrapped his hand around my throat. "But I like you, you're beautiful."
I struggled to pull free, but his hand tightened around my throat.
"Stop struggling." He whispered. "You can't get out of this. There are soldiers everywhere, so if you somehow manage to break free, you won't get far."
"Don't you dare touch me," I snarled.
He snickered, dropping his hand from my throat to grope my breast. "It will hurt less if you just submit."

The words of woman back in the room echoed in my ears, "The only way out is total submission or in the back of a truck."
