Review: Die For Me by K.A. Last
From Goodreads:
“You are my breath. I exist because you are the only one worth existing for.”
Grace Tate has made a lot of mistakes, but despite them, her mission has always been clear: keep Hopetown Valley safe. Every step of the way she’s fought for what she believes in, even when it meant breaking the rules. Fighting is what Grace does, but when she gets injured in battle, she faces her toughest challenge yet—Heaven wants her back, and they’ll stop at nothing to get her there.
Seth knows what’s happening to Grace, and he will do anything to protect her, even if it means lying. Grace suspects he’s keeping something from her, but she hasn’t been completely honest with him either.
Everything comes to a head in the final installment of the Tate Chronicles. Will Grace and Seth find the happily-ever-after they so desperately crave, or will their secrets tear them apart forever?
My Thoughts:
I had the privilege of doing the proofread for this book. I was very eager, since I enjoyed the first two books, especially Fight For Me, and wanted to get my hands on the final installment.
I sped through this book in 2 days. Grace and Seth are together, but struggling to cope with the fall out from book 2. Worst of all, Grace is no longer healing.
So much happens in this book and I don't want to give out spoilers. I did guess who Grace was supposed to die for, but it still broke my heart when it all went down.
We see the return of many characters including Charlotte and Josh. My favorite character will always be Archer, and I love that he had a chance to heal his heart after losing Charlotte.
The end though... I didn't see it coming! Great twist.
I loved this series. It gave me a great escape and was well written. Not your typical vampire and angels story.

Review: Broken Dolls by Tyrolin Puxty
From Goodreads:
Ella doesn't remember what it's like to be human; after all, she's lived as a doll for thirty years. She forgets what it's like to taste, to breathe...to love.
She watches the professor create other dolls, but they don't seem to hang around for long. His most recent creation is Lisa, a sly goth. Ella doesn't like Lisa. How could she, when Lisa keeps trying to destroy her?
Ella likes the professor's granddaughter though, even if she is dying. It's too bad the professor wants to turn Gabby into a doll, depriving her of an education...depriving her of life.
With time running out and mad dolls on the rampage, Ella questions her very existence as she unearths the secrets buried in her past; secrets that will decide whether Gabby will befall the same fate...
My Thoughts:
It's fitting I'd finish reading Broken Dolls the day before the sequel releases (Shattered Girls is now available) It's kind of great because it means technically I don't need to wait for the sequel, except I have a massive line up of reading material I need to see to first.
But anyway, Broken Dolls follows Ella, a little ballerina doll who lives in "the professor's" attic. She's lived there for so long she can't remember anything else, and she certainly can't remember her human life. Until Lisa becomes a doll with her, and raises endless questions for her.
This story holds great mystery throughout, and I learned to love sweet little Gabby, and wanted to know what was going on as much as Ella. But the truth... it broke my heart. I can't say too much or it will spoil the story, but in the end I felt terrible for the professor and really resented Ella.
The story is very engaging and surprising, well written and easy to follow without being predictable. I highly recommend this book.

Blog Tour: Temper by @becknicholas @chapterxchapter @month9books
Hi. Thanks for
having me here to celebrate the release of Temper. I’m so excited about the
sequel to Lifer and can’t wait for everyone to read it.
I’m from
Australia, in South Australia and I live just a few minutes from the sea. Where
I live and being Australian can’t help but influence my writing. In fact, the
whole idea of a ‘LIFER” someone working off ancestor’s petty crimes was
inspired by Australia’s convict past. I wanted to put that idea of being sent
far away from your home and country into the future.
My Aussieness
seeps in to my language choices although there aren’t many ‘mates’ or ‘shielas’
in the story. My wonderful editors help make sure I don’t include anything too
strange. I think we’re all influences by where we come from. I think there are
echoes of the Aussie outback in the harsh countryside where those from the
Pelican and the green Robes make their settlement. I’d like to think my
characters have some of the Aussie spirit in their courage and sense of
adventure. Their unwillingness to bow under the threats of the Company and the
way they keep fighting.
At the same
time, I think all of these things are universal. I’d like to think I’m not so
different to my American friends and my stories are accessible no matter where
you are from.
Thanks again for having me.

ABOUT BOOK 1: LIFER
The Bourne Identity
meets Under the Never Sky in this intergalactic tale of love and deception from
debut novelist Beck Nicholas.
Asher is a Lifer, a slave aboard the spaceship Pelican. A
member of the lowest rung of society, she must serve the ship’s Officials and
Astronauts as punishment for her grandparents' crimes back on Earth. The one
thing that made life bearable was her illicit relationship with Samuai, a
Fishie boy, but he died alongside her brother in a freak training accident.
Still grieving for the loss of her loved ones, Asher is
summoned to the upper levels to wait on Lady, the head Official’s wife and
Samuai’s mother. It is the perfect opportunity to gather intel for the Lifer’s
brewing rebellion. There’s just one problem—the last girl who went to the upper
levels never came back.
On the other side of the universe, an alien attack has left
Earth in shambles and a group called The Company has taken control. Blank wakes
up in a pond completely naked and with no memory, not even his real name. So
when a hot girl named Megs invites him to a black-market gaming warehouse where
winning means information, he doesn’t think twice about playing.
But sometimes the past is better left buried. As Asher and
Blank’s worlds collide, the truth comes out—everyone has been lied to...
I always wanted to write. I’ve worked as a lab assistant, a pizza
delivery driver and a high school teacher but I always pursued my first dream
of creating stories. Now, I live with my family near Adelaide, halfway between
the city and the sea, and am lucky to spend my days (and nights) writing young
adult fiction.

Review: Isla's Inheritance by Cassandra Page
From Goodreads:
Isla was content to let her father keep his secrets, but now she can’t stand the touch of iron and her dreams are developing a life of their own.
Seventeen-year-old Isla Blackman only agrees to participate in a Halloween séance because Dominic, an old crush, wants to. She is sure nothing will happen when they try to contact her mother’s spirit. But the séance receives a chilling reply.
SHE IS NOT DEAD.
Isla doesn’t want to upset her father by prying into the family history he never discusses. When the mysterious and unearthly Jack offers to help her discover the truth, Isla must master her new abilities to protect her loved ones from enemies she never knew existed.
My Thoughts:
So, this book was good. I definitely didn't hate it, but it just didn't grab me like I wanted. It's an easy, light read, set in the beautiful capital of Australia; Canberra. There were just things that felt off to me. Like their fashion was all very... late nineties. I'm thinking it should be maybe mentioned as a Modern History book. Also, HSC exams are usually almost done by Nov, and the 12th graders have already graduated so aren't expected to attend classes. I know this because my birthday is Nov 1 and I'd completed all but one of my exams by then.
Those factors aside, the book stayed a good course. A little slow paced, but the end built up nicely. Isla was likable, but I didn't feel any real connection between her and the love interest.
All up, this is a clean read, light, fun, and an easy introduction for teens into urban fantasy.

SOMEONE MUST DIE so I can live. I’ve come to terms with that. Before it turned my stomach, thinking about my donor’s death, but now I’m used to it. Most likely, it’ll be a car accident or a drunken fall. It won’t come from illness or any other natural causes that corrupt human organs and make the deceased ineligible to be a donor. A violent, painful death will be my savior. It’s the only way I’ll ever get my new heart. I open my eyes and stare upward, hoping the white fluffy clouds splotched against the blue sky will distract me from my imaginings of people dying. I guess I’m not as used to the idea of getting someone else’s heart as I thought. The harsh Australian sun makes me squint. I swing my legs around and hoist myself upright on the stadium bleacher, looking over the sports field. Readjusting my tank top strap that had slipped off my shoulder, I try to conjure up happier thoughts. At least I won’t be responsible for the person who dies, even if I get a new heart out of the mess. Yeah, happier thoughts.

EXCERPT
I closed my eyes and looked into Larry’s dreams.I was expecting to find a tortured psyche, an aspect of his subconscious manifesting itself there. Daddy or mummy issues, arachnophobia, anxiety, even garden-variety stress: I’d seen them all at one point or another. I couldn’t fix his psychological issues, but I could put a temporary block on his dreams until his doctor’s referral came good.
That was what it usually was.
What I found was a thing.
The creature was an amorphous black cloud about the size of my torso. Greasy as a burger shop floor, it had yellowing eyes and writhing tentacles … if tentacles could be covered with fine hair and worm into your skin like something from a bad horror movie.
I’d seen manifestations of people’s nightmares before, more times than I could count. But this wasn’t part of Larry. It was an interloper. A blight.
“Hello,” I said.
The blight hissed like a feral cat over a broken-backed lizard that wasn’t quite dead. Around us, the dreamscape resolved into a rolling hillside, distinctly Australian in its gentle undulations. No sharp-edged peaks here. The grass underfoot was withered, not by the summer sun but by the blight’s corruption. A single eucalypt wept tears of black sap. Clouds loomed, obscuring the vast sky.
I wouldn’t have picked Larry for the rural landscape type. You can never tell. “You’re an ugly little grease-ball, aren’t you?”
The blight’s eyes were flat, uncomprehending and angry. I wasn’t going to be able to goad it into letting go. And I didn’t want to attack it while those tentacles were embedded in the reddish dirt beneath the tree. What if one of them tore off? That could result in residual badness for Larry, like leaving a bee sting under the skin to spit toxins long after the bee has died.
Still, the blight was only small. I could take it.

Guest Post: The Mythical Encantado
So I had this idea for a new novel and I wanted it to be paranormal. No surprise there, seeing my work. I didn’t want to go down the track of the usual mythical creatures so went searching. Don’t get me wrong, I have used most of them. I have demons, vampires, angels, shapechangers and all sorts of magical creatures.
I decided I would like to write a book with something I had not heard of. I was also fascinated by Brazil, after watching Michael Palin’s series on the country. He had been swimming with the pink dolphins also known as Boto. It became obvious that the locals had built up mythical stories around these dolphins.
I started to do research and found the Encantado. In Brazil the Encantado is known also as the enchanted one.

Release: Never Forgotten by Stacey Nash (Collective #3)
Synopsis:
Continuing on from Forget Me Not and Remember Me, this is the thrilling third novel in Stacey Nash’s unforgettable series.
Since the strike on Collective territory during Anamae’s rescue, things have taken a turn for the worse. Unprovoked attacks on innocent people have Anamae and her friends fighting day and night to minimize the damage. With hundreds of lives lost, morale amongst the resistance fighters has plummeted. But that’s the least of her worries.
Manvyke still has Anamae’s mom, Annie, secreted away somewhere and after the way they parted, Anamae worries it’s not at her mother’s bidding. Maybe Annie’s disappearance all those years ago wasn’t her choice. But with Manvyke scouring the world, there’s something far more pressing than the need to find Anamae’s mother …
It’s a fight against time to find the other keys before Manvyke. In his hands, the three relics could unlock enough power to reek a much worse havoc than the current issues at hand. If the councillor gets his hands on those keys, civilization will bow down.
THE RACE IS ON.
We’re too late.
The minute I step out of the alley with my crew of resistance fighters I can tell. Blood, so
much blood everywhere. And the silence. You’d think in the midst of such horror it’d be loud:
people screaming, wailing, crying even. But it’s not. The silence is almost deafening.
My heart constricts like someone tugged at its laces.
We’re too late.
We can only help the survivors now and that’s the horrid truth. On autopilot, I walk then
run to the closest victim. A woman sprawled on the ground, blood covering every inch of her, so
I can barely make out the color of her blouse. She moans when I hold my fingers to her neck,
checking for a pulse.
Not too late for her, thank god.
“I’ve called 911.” Will’s voice echoes through my mind. Even with the lack of inflection
due to the telcom I can hear the sorrow in his words.
“Damn it,” Jax says through the same tech device, “we’re getting later each time.”
And he’s right, we are. More people perish with each attack and all because we can’t
reach them in time to intercept the Collective. I’ve never felt so useless.
The woman groans—a long drawn-out noise like no other I’ve ever heard—and slowly
sound returns to the scene. Moaning, whimpering, noises of pain, and my friends’ voices pitched
low and soothing as we reassure the wounded it’s okay. They’ll be okay. Even though sometimes
we know that they won’t. Like this woman. Each ragged breath now comes a little shorter and
sharper than her last. I hate the damn Collective for stealing people’s lives, but she doesn’t need
to see that.
“I’m here. You’re okay.” I rest my hand on her sticky arm.
Her breath hitches, she gives a last weak heave and she’s gone, her head rolling to the
We are too late.
The saddest thing in this whole mess is that I can’t cry. I’ve seen so much it’s like
nothing’s left in me but hatred. My compassion is drained. I glance around trying to decide
where I’m needed most, but too many dead and wounded lay in the open-air amphitheater that
it’s impossible to know where to turn next. In places, the bodies pile on top of each other, just
lying where they fell.
So much loss and devastation and for what? Because the Collective want to send a
message to us; that they’re in control, that the resistance is hurting more people, not helping.
Somehow I don’t think us backing off will help.
A guy walks toward me, his T-shirt—an advertisement for the main band—a tattered
mess with his bloody shoulder peeking through a gaping hole. His eyes lock on me, but they’re
unseeing, glassed over like he’s retreated inside his mind. He steps over and around those on the
ground as if he knows right where they are without looking.
Hate isn’t a strong enough word for how I feel about the Collective.
I dread the day we might turn up to find one of my friends, like Cynnie or Xane. I’m not
sure how I’d react, but I like to think I won’t see them. That neither of my free-thinking friends
would be involved in something like this, regardless of agent duty.
It doesn’t take long before the wail of sirens fills the air and as the paramedics arrive on
the scene, we’re no longer needed. Jax and Will both appear at my side looking as somber as I
feel. Today we have another person who’s seen too much, left with too little, and has no choice
but to port with us. We can’t leave him for the Collective’s clean up.
Jax takes a look at the ragged, zombie-like guy and says, “I’ll catch a ride with one of the
others.”
I nod, any words I might have had stolen by this day’s horror, then grab my charge and Will to
port us out.

Real Life Stuff in Cadence
As I've said in the past, there are scenes in Deceptive Cadence that come from my real life. This was something I consciously chose to do to not only give the characters and story a real life depth, but as a for of personal expression of memories I haven't really shared and had left me wondering "what if" which is the whole premise of the story.
So first scene coming from a real experience:
The first school disco where Cadence meets James.
In this scene, he sneaks up behind her and pretends to spank her. This did happen to me in the ninth grade and a guy from the grade above. He didn't follow me afterward, but I did notice him watching me here and there in the hallways etc and I tried to ignore it because I was nervous about guys after a string of boyfriends in my eighth grade year.
This also leans onto the second real life scene:
Where Cadence is by the window and James yells out at her. In real life, this same guy from the disco was on his own, and he saw me by a window. He paused and asked me to come out to suck on his... herm. I was like WOW what? And walked away super embarrassed. I guess he was my bad boy I was terrified to approach but left me wondering.
Cadence's mad aggression in sports:
All me, baby. I broke ribs, noses (once one of my own team mates accidentally. My bad) fingers, and not only on others, but myself too. I even drew blood by throwing a ball once. The girl totally deserved it for making my friend bleed. Man, that Catholic school was aggressive.
The painter guy:
Just like in the book, a friend and I were sent to the library to collect books for the class. She went back before me, and I followed. Once I returned to the classroom, she was giggling her head off, and told me the young painter stopped her and asked about me. This was 10th grade.
Melanie being confused as a boy:
This was a story I heard from several of my friends because I attended a different school in 7th grade. A couple of girls noticed someone in their class and believed them to be a boy because of the boy's uniform and cropped hair. When they discovered he was in fact a she, they were terribly embarrassed for crushing on "him." They all laughed about it further down the track, unlike Melanie who took offense.
9/11 at the school disco:
The night this happened, I had attended a school disco before. I don't think anyone can forget that day, so I placed Cadence in the same place I was.
Geri:
Yes, Geri is loosely based on someone who had been my close friend, then we fell apart for a reason that still remains a mystery to me. Cadence had a chance to discover and fix why she lost her best friend, I don't think I'll ever know.
Michael:
Michael is also based on a good friend of mine. I will name him too because he got me through a lot in high school. Warren was in my roll call class, and gave me sound, quiet advice to get me through. I will forever be grateful to him for his uncomplicated friendship he gave me, thus why I put Michael in there.
James:
As I said before, there was that guy in the grade above me who kind of hovered for a while, but never really approached me. In his 12th grade, he and his friends got suspended for vandalizing the school, and he was the only one to turn up for their "community service" of helping with maintaining the school grounds. I guess when I saw that I wondered what kind of person he could have been if he had better friends.
James also has many of my husband's quirky personality traits. Maybe that's why he's so lovable.
Places I knew were also included.
The high school is my high school; Penrith HS, the ice rink in Penrith was a place we loved to hang out during breaks, Cadence's home is a modified version of my own. In book two, the flat she and Lyla live in is a replica of my first flat in Ashfield, and James' town home is like one several of my friends lived in in Emu Plains. The beach he takes Cadence to for their one year is Cave's Beach in Newcastle, which technically isn't in Sydney, but that's the beach I envisioned.

Review: Fight For Me (The Tate Chronicles #2) by K.A. Last
From Goodreads:
“How can I fight for you when I don’t know what I’m fighting for?”
When Grace Tate became one of the fallen to protect a vampire, it got her into more trouble than she’d bargained for. She’s angry at Charlotte for hiding the truth, and with Josh living in the city and Seth missing, life is harder than ever.
It’s about to get a lot harder…
Grace doesn’t want to leave Hopetown Valley, but when Josh ignores her calls she decides to go and search for him. She doesn’t expect to run into Seth as well.
When she reaches the city, Grace learns that Charlotte is the most hunted vampire in Wide Island. The city vamps want her blood, and the angels are after her soul. Grace gets caught in the crossfire of a battle she never wanted, but to win one war, she has to fight another.
Torn between the one she gave up everything for, and the one who sacrificed everything for her, Grace has to face Charlotte, and the past, if she wants to fight for her future. But how can she fight for someone who doesn’t want to fight for her?
Every choice Grace makes becomes a battle, and in every battle someone has to die.
My Thoughts:
I have read book one, and the novellas K.A. also released, so I was eager to get stuck into this next installment.
To start off, we see Seth stuck in the In-Between with Angelica. It feels kind of jumpy, and a little confusing as Josh is shot up, then sent away. I felt a bit like I missed a chunk where Josh has slept with Grace and is suddenly in Wide Island. Maybe I just need to read the end of book 1 again, or one of the novellas. Either way, I was kind of confused at first, but I did get over it.
The first half, I'd say, is much slower than the first book. As it jumps between Grace and Josh, I feel like we kind of go in circles as they keep missing each other. But when things do finally happen, they really happen. The second half definitely moves along and gave plenty of action.
I'll keep reading this series for sure, and hope Grace and Seth end up together with a nice HEA! Oh, and Archer too, because he's great.

World Apart by Maggie Mundy
I'm always more than happy to help out other writers with whatever they need, so when Maggie recently released her latest novel, I was more than willing to help!
The second book in The Earthbound Trilogy is out
now available
Blurb World Apart
Clare and
Trevi have made their way through a portal to get back to Earth. Instead they
find themselves on a dying world as a mysterious mist closes in. Trevi’s
scarred twin brother, Celi, has accompanied them. He meets a female magician
called Fane, who is an outcast like him. In this world only men are magicians
and they believe her existence is the cause for the mist. Fane and Trevi learn
to trust and eventually love each other, as they fight to find a way to save
the world. There are people who want Fane, but Celi will use all his powers as
a vampire to stop them.
Excerpt
Celi didn’t move. He crouched against the
wall with his hands over his face. He was disfigured and repulsive. His long
matted hair reached down passed his shoulders and had offered some protection
so no one would have to look upon his deformed face. The guards who had taunted
him over the years would sometimes show him a mirror so he could see the scared
reflection. He hadn’t needed to see it to know it was there. He lived with the
agony of it every day. He retracted his fangs for fear she would hurt him
again.
“You don’t need to look at me, but I need to
chop this hair off. The days of a comb doing any good here are long gone. Do
you have name?” Fane said, as she gently touched his head this time. She
offered her other hand to help him stand.
“Celi.” He took her hand in his, hesitant the
same sparks he had felt before would return. He limped across to a chair and
sat while he still kept the other hand covering his face. He could hear the
snip of scissors and gazed between his fingers at the pile of matted hair
growing on the floor at his feet.
“Damn,” Fane yelled as she moved away holding
her hand.
Celi’s fangs pop through his gums again at
the smell of her blood. It was unlike any he had smelt before. She backed away
as he reached out and grabbed her hand in his. He didn’t care if she hurt him
again. She smelt so good he had to taste her.
“Let go,” she shouted.
She had cut her thumb and the beautiful trial
of red blood was flowing down to her wrist. He leant forward and licked the
wound clean. Trevi had showed him how this had healed Clare when she had been
injured when they had first met. He could only hope the same. He had to be
honest to himself though and admit he wouldn’t have resisted if he could. The
door to his room flung open as two guards rushed in with swords drawn. Celi
scuffled across and pressed up against the wall to get away from them. His heart
beat fast as he waited for the attack he knew would come. Fane put up her hand
to stop them before they attacked.
“It’s alright; I just nipped myself with the
shears.”
“You should have left the hair on. At least
it covered his ugly mug. He’s more of a freak than you are.” The soldiers
laughed and shook his head as he left.
Fane held her hand up as she glanced across
at him. “Take no note of them. You’re a strange one though. That’s the first
time I’ve seen a bloodsucker heal a person and not feast on them. Didn’t know
they could heal wounds with a lick. It’s a secret they have kept well hidden on
this world. Now put those fangs away and sit down and let me finish.”
His head felt lighter and his breathing
became slower as his body relaxed. He didn’t speak, but let Fane continue until
he was shorn. He tried to understand the sensation her blood had given him. It
was not like the humans or the animals he knew of. It was not evil like Sari’s,
but even the small amount he had taken had eased his pain. For a second the
cloud covering his right eye had cleared, and the room had come more clearly
into focus. Now it was the same as before. He had glimpsed something else. The
blood had given them a connection for a moment before she had shielded her
mind. The Lady Alicia had sent her here, but Fane had not wanted to come. She
had feared him, but felt she had no choice. If she was to be allowed to stay
longer with this clan she had to gain information for them.
Clare
gets transported from present day Florence to an alternate world, one that
looks like fourteenth century Italy. The only way back is through a portal half
a world away, plus the local High priestess wants her dead, and the only one
she can trust is a vampire called Trevi. He is the only one who exits in this
world, and she knows more about what he is than he does. He is hard to resist,
especially when he saves her life. Trevi can take her home but he is keeping
one big secret. She will have to be like him to survive the journey through the
portal back to her world making a myth a reality.

I live in Adelaide, Australia with my husband,
two cats, two dogs and a snake. I have a motorbike that I would like to ride
more than I do, and I love walking at the beach and listening to the waves
crashing on the shore. I've always loved reading all forms of speculative
fiction from high fantasy and paranormal to horror and decided the stories in
my head needed to be written down. It was either that or start on medication.
Unlike many who have been writing since childhood, I didn’t know I wanted to be
a writer until a few years back. I started doing a degree in drama but
soon realized my love was in writing, though there is a play lurking somewhere
on my computer. My day job is as a nurse in the operating room which helps with
research for my gory scenes. I believe romance can be fun to read and write but
it’s exciting to spice it up with the uncertainty that comes with the worlds of
mythical creatures where the rules can be broken. I am a member of Romance Writers of Australia,
and the local chapter SARA (South Australian Romance Authors. She has five
books published. Two vampire novellas called Blood Scent and Blood Oath. Plus
four paranormal romances called World Change, World Apart, Hidden Mortality and
Unknown Protector.
