Guest Post: The Accidental Turn Series by J.M. Frey

BLURB:

The Accidental Turn Series  follows Pip, who is pulled against her will into the epic fantasy novel series she’s loved since she was a teenager. However, the world is darker, and far more dangerous than she could have ever predicted, especially when it turns out the hero is a much bigger misogynistic ass than she knew.  Pip knows how to circumnavigate the Hero’s Journey and the pitfalls and loopholes of this particular world – but what will happen to her beloved characters outside of the comfort of the fantasy they were written for? And what happens when it’s not the male-power-fantasy hero, but the hero’s overlooked and bullied little brother who proves to be her biggest champion?

POST:

What is it like to finish an epic fantasy series? Mostly, it’s exhausting. Sure, thrilling, triumphant, terrifying, all of those things, but mostly exhausting. I handed in the draft of the forth and final book of The Accidental Turn Series in December of 2017 and I swear, all I’ve done since is sleep. (Or rather, wish I could sleep, as I’ve been editing two other novels, which are being published this year.)
It takes a lot out of a gal to write a trilogy. What a lot of people don’t realize is that writers aren’t only just writing while they’ve got the pen in their hands, or their fingers on their keys. They are thinking about their stories constantly, playing mental jenga with scenes as they do the dishes, and composing the perfect opening line in a boring office meeting, and brainstorming how on Earth they’re going to get themselves out of that corner they wrote a character into while doing the bedtime routine with the kiddos. They are making notes everywhere – scrap paper, receipts, notebooks in purses, on whiteboards and chalk walls, and sticky notes bristling from the edge of their computer screens like a lion’s mane.
And the moment when you hand that final manuscript in, that moment when it stops being your burden is… wonderful. Scary, because you don’t know if your editor, agent, publisher, secondary/beta reader, friends, mom, or postman will love it. But at the same, such a relief. Because you know that you’ve done the best that you can, and that you can stop carrying your little book baby all over the place. It has its own legs now, it can start to learn to walk. It’ll be running, soon enough, and then, if you’re lucky, flying off the shelves.
Authors like to write stories about writing. Stephen King did it. John Scalzi did it. Jodi Picoult did it. Jim C. Hines did it. Cornelia Funke did it. Jane Austen did it. When I started The Untold Tale, I knew it would be about fans, and community, and cosplay, and Mary Sues, and all the things I loved about fanfiction and conventions. But I didn’t realize so much of the books would be about writing, and writers, and the burden/joy of creating a novel.
Through the writer character in this series, I had the unique pleasure to be able to not only talk about writing, but show my audience what it meant to be a creator. I hope you like Elgar Reed, and his creations Kintyre and Forsyth Turn, Sir Bevel Dom, and the world he envisioned. And when you read a book – not just my books, but every book – you have a better understanding of just how much of each of us goes into the work we write.
Yeah, it’s exhausting. But it’s thrilling. It’s wonderfully challenging.  It’s amazing. It’s magic.

EXCERPT
I cupped the cool, clear water in my hands, letting it filter through the tiny crevices between my fingers. I watched a brilliant colored spider make her way across her water-jeweled web toward an unlucky fly. Above me, the sun shone across the mist, creating a rainbow that rippled in three directions. Lying now on a rock at the edge of the pool, I closed my eyes and dreamt of a time when my life would make more sense.
I must have fallen asleep because I jolted awake when I heard a voice from the landing just above where I lay.
“Becka,” the call echoed off the water and walls. At first I thought I was dreaming, so I lay still and let it come. The familiar voice became clearer when my name was called again, this time from a point closer than the last.
“Becka, are you all right?” The deep baritone whisper was so sensual it made me smile. I didn’t open my eyes until I felt a hand caress my shoulder. Even then, I couldn’t believe I was awake.
“Are you all right?” Jonathan removed his pack and sat next to me on the rock, touching my cheek with the palm of his hand.
I gathered everything inside my heart and soul and tried to move away, feeling caged by the intimate way he leaned over me. The concern in his eyes held me down until he saw that I was okay.
“Thank goodness.” He didn’t move away. “I thought you’d passed out again.”
“What the hell?” I sat up straight and scooted back. My voice was controlled, though my question was demanding. “Did you follow me here?”
“I followed you and Annie from the resort, yes. It was your mother’s idea for me to come to Hawaii. She told me where to find you.”
“Why would she do that?” I stood up and took a step away.
“She thought I should come here and talk to you.” He watched me as I slowly put distance between us.
I remembered my mother’s coy smile when she gave me the airline tickets, and I knew in that instant that he was telling the truth. My mother’s meddling frustrated me. “That figures.”
I gazed over his slightly squared, handsome face. Not handsome in the pretty sense, more the serious, rugged sense. His wavy hair was tucked behind his ears, the mist brightening the lighter strands. The eyebrows of a slightly darker shade were manly, but not too bushy. His skin was bronzed with a fresh tropical tan, and those kissable lips were shadowed by a day-old beard. A satisfied smile broke when he noticed my perusal, but I didn’t stop staring until I caught those eyes, the color of the deepest part of the ocean.
“How old are you?” I asked, finding no noticeable wrinkles. The oddness of the question at that particular moment surprised us both.
“Twenty-nine.” He slowly stood up and moved toward me.
“Oh.” I watched him carefully.
“Does age matter to you, Becka?” He raised his hand.
“Matter for what?”
“Does it matter how old I am if you want me and I want you?” He took another small step, closing the distance. “Besides, your mother already told me you’ve only got me by a few years. I like older women.” He winked and flashed that disarming smile again.
Whoa. I swear Silvy. I held up my hand as I took another step back away from him. He watched this with curiosity, not really seeming to take my retreat as a negative response.
Stepping into the cool water up to my knees, I could think of nothing but escape. Even water was better than the lethal energy vibrating around Jonathan. “Do you always blurt out what you’re thinking?”
“You don’t like to answer questions, do you, Becka?” He moved his pack farther up on the rock, slipped off his hiking boots and socks, and followed me out into the pool, wading closer with every step.
“Your questions have no answers, Mr. Parker.” I watched his taut body press against his T-shirt and cargo shorts. “I have a question of my own, if you don’t mind,” I said, forcing my eyes from his body. “Why are you here? Why did Silvy think we should talk?”
“Because your mother thinks we belong together, and you’re just denying it.” Once again without pretense.
“Oh.” My breath caught. “So the two of you decided ambush would be the best way to convince me of this?” My stomach clenched.
“She just wanted you to stop running for one second and listen to what I have to say. She thought Hawaii would be the perfect place for us to have some time alone together without any distractions.”
“Why wouldn’t she let me in on this grand plan of hers?” I wanted to see how he would explain it though I knew this was how Silvy works.
“Because she figured you wouldn’t approve. She told me that you’re not a believer, that you’d be tough to convince.”
“A believer in what?” I knew exactly what he was referring to, but I wanted to hear him say it. I couldn’t believe Silvy had created another disciple so quickly.
“Doesn’t matter. We’ll talk about that later. Right now, I’d like an answer to the question I just asked you.” He stood directly in front of me.
“I don’t remember the question,” I lied, looking away, unable to move when he tilted my chin up with the touch of his finger. My knees threatened to give out from beneath me as he searched my eyes.
“I know you feel it, too. I can see it.” He whispered the words just seconds before sweeping his lips across my forehead. “It almost hurts, the way it feels.” He spread light kisses over my face, first around my eyes, then along my cheekbones, finally capturing my lips gently, tasting them with the tip of his warm tongue.
At that moment, I was frozen in a fantasy dream, being taken by Prince Charming in a tropical paradise. I could do nothing but respond to his wishes. The taste of him was salt and spearmint, his scent an intoxicating manly smell of soap and sweat. I realized I’d closed my eyes, but I wanted to see. I wanted to be sure this was really happening to me, Becka Clemmons, celibacy’s woman-of-the-year.
When I finally found the courage to open my eyes, I saw him then, for the first time without fear in my heart. This gentle man, whom I knew nothing about, had me completely enraptured. I decided to let it happen, to try and satisfy this desperate feeling inside so it would leave me in peace.
I drew my hands up over his strong shoulders, feeling the hardness of his body against mine. I ran my fingers through his hair as though I’d done it a thousand times before. My breasts now melted against him, hard and demanding.
My mouth opened and I willingly participated in our first real kiss. The kiss sent shocks of excitement through every limb of my body, landing a current squarely at the pit of my stomach, where an incredible ache began to grow. I was prepared to drag him on that rock and ravage him. I’d never had desire affect me the way it did with this man. It made no sense to me, but clarity wasn’t important at that moment.
“Becka.” He pulled away suddenly, leaving me desperate to have him back in my arms, desperate to have him. “Can you feel it? This is not the first time we’ve been together. It feels too natural and real.” His hands held my face between them, his eyes nearly wet with pain.
“Please don’t make this more than it is. It’s just desire, nothing more.” Tears ran down my cheeks for no reason I could grasp. I felt the fear coming back to me, replacing the need with its fury. “I…. I can’t, Jonathan. I don’t understand this.” I took his hands from me, biting back regret as I did so - my stomach sick with emotion.
From above I heard Annie calling, the voice of rescue just in time. I backed away slowly, leaving him there once again, alone to face our connection without me, too afraid to face it with him. It was just too much for me.

Guest Post: The Heroines Journey by G. Miki Hayden

Blurb:
Two girls separated by centuries, one living in the Middle Ages and one in the here and now, find common ground in their heroines’ journeys: the need to forge their own lives and identities and the hope of meeting that one, true love.

Heroines Rule in The Heroine’s Journey

We’ve heard about the Hero’s Journey for most of our lives. That’s the model of what all fiction is supposed to be. But now, we girls and women are coming into our own—the time is up, and today is ours. Our struggles have become noticeable in society and the gender so totally submerged throughout human history is on the rise—and owning our equality with the male.
Yet the truth is that life isn’t all about gender; it’s about finding our authentic selves and being able to live from that with courage and intelligence.

Mostly, though, my novel, The Heroine’s Journey, is meant to be fun. Two girls help each other across the centuries and are clever enough and determined enough to succeed at what they need to do.

Today, this very day, youth is coming into its own and taking hold of the ideals that have been held up in our society while not being entirely enacted. So, hero or heroine, this is our time. Humanity and love will certainly conquer.

Here's an excerpt for a little taste!
"Cinderella," griped Gwen to her best friend Kresta, while the two sat in the noisy cafeteria eating a "Healthful Wednesday" lunch of chow mein. "What was Cinderella's claim to fame? The size of her foot? Give me a break here. So she got the guy. That's it?""You're right," agreed Kresta, tapping a bit more soy sauce from a miniature paper cup onto her food. "She didn't do anything clever or smart. She was just a ‘good' girl. Any luck she stumbled over was by way of the fairy godmother's generosity. Very handy.""Yeah," continued Gwen. "And those females in Shakespeare who dressed like men. What's up with that? They had to hide their gender to achieve anything? That can't be what the Heroine's Journey is all about."The girls stared at one another. Gwen pondered. As two of the members of the boy's basketball team passed the girls' end of the table, Gwen's attention wavered, and Kresta shifted in her chair: Lance Reilly and Jerod Afifa. Gwen's heart rate increased, and her mouth drained of moisture. Although getting the guy wasn't her idea of an ultimate objective, the concept did have a certain pulse-accelerating appeal.Deep in a conversation that demanded hearty peals of male laughter, neither athlete gave the girls a glance.

G. Miki Hayden has published a steady flow of short stories in anthologies, national magazines, and small press publications. She has had a number of novels in print, including Question Woman & Howling Sky, a new adult fantasy set after a series of cataclysmic ecological disasters; Strings, a middle grade fantasy based very loosely on string theory; and The Heroine’s Journey, a young adult mind-meld fantasy spanning many centuries. Miki teaches writing online at Writer’s Digest University, has been on The New York Times summer reading list, and won a short story Edgar.

Guest Author: Child of Nod (The Balance Series Book 1) by C.W. Snyder

Blurb:
Alice wakes one day to find herself on the other side of death, in the corrupted fairy tale land of Nod. Unable to remember much of the events leading to her demise, she sets out on a journey to discover her memory and the reason for her presence in Nod. Unknown to her, the man responsible for her death, Jack, is on a mission to find her spirit and end her second life.

Alice takes flight, only to find herself drawn into the lives of those around her and the mystery permeating that place. From the humble streets of Elysium to the mirrored spires of Memoria, her journey takes her on a path that leads to a decision that will affect the fate of Nod.

Along the way, she meets a cast of characters that include a madman with a dark secret, her faithful companion, Dog, and woman made of memory. Together, they help her on her journey as she uncovers the truth of Nod and the woman behind it all, the Red Queen.

Little known fact about the novel: Child of Nod was conceived in a dream - about a nomadic group of worshippers and their desert queen. It took four years to write, and is the culmination of my love of fable, myth, and fairy tale.

It's been called a dark and twisted Alice in Wonderland - horror fantasy for the modern age. In it you'll find puns, references to works of art, snark, poetry, and music, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Bio:
C.W. Snyder is a marketing and communications coordinator currently splitting his time between work and writing. He has worked as a developer and a project manager and authored several short stories, including a runner-up in Fictuary’s short story contest. His literary influences include Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and Richard Kadrey.
Born and raised in Michigan, Clayton is a North Dakota transplant currently living in Bismarck with his wife and two dogs. He participates in several charitable works, including the annual Brave the Shave event for research for childhood cancer, and the local humane society.

Excerpt:
I had set my alarm clock so I could get up early in the morning, to head off to the cottage. Turning off the light and lying down, I snuggled under the covers.
I was just nodding off when I heard ringing. I hit the alarm clock, but the noise didn’t stop. Blinking, it dawned on me that it wasn’t the clock, it was the phone. I jumped up and answered it before the machine did.
“Kat?” the voice on the other end said.
“Yes?” I didn’t recognize the voice. Who would be calling at this time of night?
“It’s me, Sam.”
“Oh, hi,” I said, my voice flat.
What does he want?“I was wondering, do you want to go out on Monday evening?”
“Oh, no, I don’t think so.” I tried to think of an excuse.
He went quiet, then asked, “Why not?”
“I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
As the words left my mouth, I realized I shouldn’t have said them. I should have thought of something better. I didn’t know what else to say.
“Oh, so that’s it? You don’t want to see me again, do you?” I could hear the attitude in his voice.
“No. I think we should call it a day.” The phone went quiet.
“Sam?”
“That’s about right, you bitch!”
I froze, stunned.
“You lead me on and then dump me, you whore.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My God, where was the caring man from earlier? The one who had given me his jacket.
I slammed the phone down. As I did, I could hear him shouting and swearing at me. I couldn’t believe my ears.
Wow! I certainly had a narrow escape with him. I’m glad I didn’t tell him in person.I was angry, annoyed that I hadn’t retaliated.
He was so nice. Who would have thought he could turn so nasty? Just wait until I get my hands on Jonathan. I’ll wring his bloody neck. What was he thinking, introducing me to a lunatic?I made sure all the windows and doors were locked and finally went to bed.
I dreamt about the man on the rock. It was different this time.
The nameless vision of masculine beauty watched the water bubble and swirl as it flowed past him. He turned his head in my direction and smiled. There was something wrong with his eyes. They were not the beautiful blue eyes I loved so much. They were yellow! He glanced back at the stream and my gaze followed his. I looked back to where he stood and took a step forward. He wasn’t there! My heart sank.Where had he gone?I scanned the area but he was nowhere to be seen. I heard a noise above me and saw a large bird flying high in the sky. It swooped toward the stream and took off into the woods. Where did he go? He was there one minute and gone the next. I had just plucked the courage up to speak to him and he’d disappeared.
Damn it!

In 2010, I started to write my very first book, Midnight Angel. My husband and youngest son wondered why I was writing it and what I aimed to achieve? At that point, I didn't really know, but I enjoyed myself and got those long dormant creative juices flowing. I tinkered with it on and off and even, at one point sent it to a publisher. Unfortunately, they turned out to be a self-publishing company, you know the sort. Have you written a book? We will publish it. Self-publishing is alright if you can afford to go down that route but their plans were an expense, I wasn't prepared to pay. So I sat on my book and revisited it every now and then.
After going through a serious illness I decided to send my manuscript to Soulmate Publishing in New York and low and behold, Debbie the Senior Editor liked it. I had to tinker with it and then resubmit it but in 2015 she sent me a contract. Wooohooo.
I have been working hard, setting up my website, editing my book and generally preparing for my release date. If I hadn't of been ill, I would probably still be sitting with my book on my computer. Reading it and re-reading it. So, in my opinion, everything does happen for a reason. I hope this give you, the reader, the push to follow your dreams. No matter what they are. Life really is too short.

Bio:
Tracey A Wood has lives in Staffordshire, in the United Kingdom. She has been married for over thirty years and has two children. She loves snowboarding, skiing, jumping out of aeroplanes and bungee jumping. Well, that is when other people are doing them. She prefers to have her nose in a book or writing one. She also loves to people watch which her husband is always telling her to stop doing. She has a job that she enjoys and works full time. Although if she won the lottery, that might change! In 2014, she decided to take the bull by the horns and send her manuscript to Soul Mate Publishing. She feels so privileged to have her book published, as this is the first one that she has written. It has made her dream of being a published author a reality. Life really is too short to wait, you’ve got to go for it. Her books are fast paced and centred on a female lead who finds an inner strength after being thrown into situations that are beyond her control.
