How you created the plot for this book around what you learned from your family history.

Hi! Thank you so much for having me on your blog. This is an excellent question that I don’t think anyone has ever asked me before. The idea for the series came from, as you mentioned, a story I discovered while doing family history research. One of my ancestors was a Daughter of the King (a girl adopted by King Louis the IVX and sent to Canada to pick a husband and help settle Quebec) but because she was a good girl and did her part for her country without any issues, there isn’t much information about her personally. There is a LOT of information about girls who didn’t follow the rules or decided to do their own thing in Canada. 

This got me wondering. What would make a nice girl from a good family (the Daughters of the King were all recruited from upstanding families in France, some were even nobles) want to leave her cushy life and sail across the pirate infested Atlantic ocean to pick out a soldier husband and settle down? It was a really fun game of “what if” that I actually dwelled on for a few years. I went back and forth from a bad family life, to a kidnapping situation. None of that felt right. Then the image of a girl came to me that fit exactly the kind of character I would want to write about. She was rich, beautiful, popular, completely spoiled, and had a lot of growing up to do. But there had to be things about her that made you want to stick with her. Even rich beautiful people have trials, so I gave her a mean governess with ulterior motives, a best friend below her station that is heading off on adventure without her, an absentee father who is trying to marry her off to the highest bidder, and a passion for machinery. When this all came together in my mind, I knew I had the right combination for a great story. After that it was all downhill. The more research I did about the era, the life styles, fashion, and pirates, the more excited I got and the faster the story flowed. I love writing about characters that start out borderline despicable and then redeem themselves. I feel like it has the biggest payoff in the end and if you do it right.

However, at the end of the first book, I felt like Marguerite was just starting to come into her own and learn the things that she needed to learn. I also felt like I didn’t get to spend enough time with the pirates, so that led to a natural path for the second book— pirates and more shenanigans!

I hope you enjoy reading the series as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Marguerite does grow up in the end, eventually, I promise!

Author's Favorite Scene:

There’s a scene around a third of the way through the book where the girl Colin has been crushing on breaks into his house in the middle of the night and wakes him up. Colin’s already started going through his changes and he’s having trouble adapting and doesn’t really know what’s going on but there’s one consistent thing in his life and that’s how he feels about Becca Emerson. I love this scene because a) Which of us didn’t have a crush in middle/high school? And b) how awesome would it have been if that crush suddenly turned up at your house in the middle of the night and wanted to hang out? (in this case it’s to visit a crime scene but still, how cool?!)

Colin’s always been convinced he’s a loser and Becca taking an interest in him is his first steps towards breaking out of his loser-dom. I know if 13 year old me had woken up to find the girl I’d been crushing on had broken into my house and wanted to go visit the scene of a recent violent murder, I’d have been ecstatic!

My other favourite scene occurs at the end of the book, which I can’t really talk about. We all had those teachers we hated in school. That one teacher who was a bully to all the students. Or the English teacher who seemed like he genuinely hated teaching. Imagine if you could get back at that teacher . . . just imagine . . . 

Andrew Buckley attended the Vancouver Film School’s Writing for Film and Television program. After pitching and developing several screenplay projects for film and television, he worked in marketing and public relations, before becoming a professional copy and content writer. During this time Andrew began writing his first adult novel, DEATH, THE DEVIL AND THE GOLDFISH, followed closely by his second novel, STILTSKIN. He works as an editor for Curiosity Quills Press.

Author's favorite character and why they are the favorite.

This question is, by far, the hardest one I’ve been asked on my blog tour.  I keep changing my answer because, the truth is, I deeply love all my characters.  At this point, I’ve spent so much time with them that they feel very real to me.  Earlier today, I wrote a scene for Submerge (the second book in the Mer Chronicles) that featured Caspian, Lia’s best friend.  So for today (and on many, many days), he is my favorite.

            When I started Emerge, I knew that, like Lia, I would fall hard for Clay since he’s exactly the guy I would have crushed on in high school.  But Caspian snuck up on me.  I never expected I’d feel quite as strongly as I do about the observant, insightful merman who has been Lia’s closest friend since they were guppies.  With the number of hours every day he spends swimming, I knew he’d be buff.  And with his sandy bond hair falling into his ocean blue eyes, I knew he’d be handsome.  But it was his personality, which (no pun intended) emerged as I was writing him, that really drew me in.  He’s reserved, so it’s easy to underestimate him, but he’s so smart and caring—and he sincerely values learning, which is a trait I can’t resist.

            Okay, I’ll stop gushing.  Suffice it to say, Caspian, with his quiet contemplation and fierce loyalty, stole my heart.  And I hope he does the same to readers.

Ask me tomorrow and I’ll pick Clay.  Or Melusine.

Hi. Thanks for having me here to celebrate the release of Temper. I’m so excited about the sequel to Lifer and can’t wait for everyone to read it.

I’m from Australia, in South Australia and I live just a few minutes from the sea. Where I live and being Australian can’t help but influence my writing. In fact, the whole idea of a ‘LIFER” someone working off ancestor’s petty crimes was inspired by Australia’s convict past. I wanted to put that idea of being sent far away from your home and country into the future.

My Aussieness seeps in to my language choices although there aren’t many ‘mates’ or ‘shielas’ in the story. My wonderful editors help make sure I don’t include anything too strange. I think we’re all influences by where we come from. I think there are echoes of the Aussie outback in the harsh countryside where those from the Pelican and the green Robes make their settlement. I’d like to think my characters have some of the Aussie spirit in their courage and sense of adventure. Their unwillingness to bow under the threats of the Company and the way they keep fighting.

At the same time, I think all of these things are universal. I’d like to think I’m not so different to my American friends and my stories are accessible no matter where you are from.

My thoughts:
I had the great privilege of reading this book in its early stages. Perilous Journey is a fun read, detailing the story of Statham's ancestor with an interesting steam punk twist. Marguerite is a spunky, yet spoiled brat, who goes through a transformation throughout the book into a strong, intelligent young woman. 
I loved Jacques throughout, and Claude... well, I wasn't very happy with him at the end.
This is a clean read, and a great adventure for teens and adults alike.

ABOUT LISA T. CRESSWELL:

Lisa, like most writers, began scribbling silly notes, stories, and poems at a very young age. Born in North Carolina, the South proved fertile ground to her imagination with its beautiful white sand beaches and red earth. In fifth grade, she wrote, directed and starred in a play “The Queen of the Nile” at school, despite the fact that she is decidedly un-Egyptian looking. Special Guest Leigh Statham, CP and Friend!

So I'm taking a moment to host my good friend and CP, Leigh. She has just released her debut novel, so I wanted to have her come by and share with everyone all about her book.

I'm so excited to be on Katie Teller's blog today! Thank you for having me. And I'm so excited to talk to you about my debut YA novel - The Perilous Journey of the Not-So-Innocuous Girl from Month9Books.

So, when people find out I sold a book the first thing they ask me is, "What's the title?"

And I hesitate. 

Because that's a freaking huge title. And titles are a big deal. I have very few writing buddies who just throw out a great title in the first try. Most of us agonize over it as we write, then while we edit, and sometimes even right before it goes to print. I was no different.

My working title was Daughters of the King. Cool right? Sounds European, old world, possibly a bit too fantasy rather than steampunk, but I was ok with that. Then I got deep into my historical research. 

Turns out just about every book written on the Daughters of the King program (a real 17th century French program meant to bolster the French colonies in Canada) was titled... wait for it... Daughters of the King. 

Surprised? Nah, but I should have known that. So for a long time I just called it Marguerite. That's the main character's name and she really is the driving force of the whole book. It's about her life, her choices, her adventure - but I still didn't feel that was a good representation of the work itself. It just didn't feel right. 

So before I started sending out queries, I decided to spend some quality time and really bang out a cool one word title. Because all the hottest books these days have awesome one word titles that some how magically encapsulate all that is their YA novel. 

In order to do this I gathered up chocolate snacks, my thesaurus and dictionary and found a sunny spot to flip around pages and think. 

The first word that I came to was perilous. I thought... that's a great word! And it sums up her journey really well. But I wasn't satisfied. Then I ran into innocuous and I thought... ooooh! That's a great word! And what a great meaning!

   synonyms:

   harmless, safe, nontoxic, innocent;

But yah, nothing about this book was innocuous. If I wanted to write a book and call it Innocuous, it would have to be a completely different story. Actually, that book sounded like a futuristic germ warfare kinda thing. Not my style at all, and if anything, Marguerite is not-so-innocuous.

So I was back to square one, looking up words, trying them out, throwing them away. Finally I threw the rest of my M&M's in my mouth, said, "This is stupid!"  and I quickly typed "The Perilous Journey of the Not-So-Innocuous Girl" in the spot labeled <Kick Butt Title Goes Here!> and started sending out queries. 

I'd heard that most books ended up having the title changed anyway. And by this point, I figured, hey! Maybe they have the perfect one word I didn't think of. In the mean time, maybe this will catch some attention - and it worked.

Turns out, the publisher, my editor, and everyone who's read it loves the title. I still think it's crazy and I still pause for a minute before I rattle it off at unsuspecting would-be fans, but I'm kind of in love with it. It sums up the book perfectly, it uses my two favorite words for the book (and hyphenated phrase) and it definitely gets attention.

Plus I think it captures the steampunk spirit of "more is way better" pretty well. How do you feel about long titles vs. short? How do you feel about finding the perfect title? ABOUT LEIGH STATHAM: 

Leigh Statham was raised in the wilds of rural Idaho, but found her heart in New York City. She worked as a waitress, maid, artist, math teacher, nurse, web designer, art director, thirty-foot inflatable pig and mule wrangler before she settled down in the semi-quiet role of wife, mother and writer. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, four children, five chickens and two suspected serial killer cats.
